Marlin 45-70 guide gun

Right now I'm shooting Beaver with a new bullet (325grs.), but you know what it's like when you're out there alone, only you and the beaver...that's why I like to have so much lead in reserve. Remember, it's either you..or the beaver, only one survives, only one's goin' home.

This is the version I'd be looking at. Its not often that an off the shelf rifle has everything I'd want in a single package, but the 1895SBL certainly seems to, without recourse to a gunsmith! The scope rail and the laminated stock are sure to offend the purists though.

X2, when I get one, that's going to be it!

Well I did some research and now I'm not too happy. I like the look of the standard guide gun's 4 shot tube, but also love everything about the 1895GBL, the blued gun with laminate stock, rail, peep sights etc.

Anyone know if I can buy a standard guide gun, and then buy the rail, peep sights and laminate stock from marlin? Do they sell aftermarket parts for these things?

It can be done, and I am close to being there. I have a Marlin GS, and installed the same XS rail as the GBL on it. I bought stocks but I don't like the laminate so I found some nice wood from a standard 45/70 that will work great for me. All I need now are a lever and a trigger plate, although the trigger plate is not really necessary.

Got my stock from Marlin through Gravel Agency in Quebec. It took a while, apparently Marlin waits until they have a bunch of stuff to send them. They don't send individual items.

Get the Wild West trigger if you can, its nice and smooth and eliminates alot of the factory creep. They also make a nice red anodized follower. You might want to change out the factory sites, hi viz sites look nice and theres also some nice peep style sites.

Its a nice rifle, I have a 45-70 Stainless guide gun.

Oh the factory recoil pad is a pos, get something better. Kickeeze or a grind to fit limbsaver both work nice.

This is my 1895SBL with the 6 round magazine, I think the full length mag does look better. Balance doesn't seem to be affected when it's full, and I load 450 grain hard casts.

What is the difference between want and need? Me likey!

before i bought my rossi , i was looking at a 45-70 marlin , and was disapointed with the small magazine capacity of the short barreled rifles .

this is how i was going to fix it .

either buy the long barreled rifle and have the barrel and mag tube shortened to 19 inches .

or buy a guide gun and order the mag tube and related parts from the long barreled rifle , then shorten the new mag tube till it was even with the barrel and then swap it over .

A very popular mod for guide gun owners.

I ended up buying a plain old 1895g. I love it! I've been handloading and bought some 405 grain gas checked bullets from bullet barn, and some craters and crater lites from jae bok young.

I'm gonna try some of em this weekend, I'm expecting a sore shoulder!

What powder are you using for those 405's?

Oh, and get a Pachmayr slip-on Decelerator....size small. It makes those 405's going at 2000+ fps a little bit easier on the shoulder.

I built a 6+1 guide gun using a regular old blued guide gun. All you need to do is buy the tube mag for a Marlin cowboy, cut to length, and cut a new dovetail about 3/4" back from the end of the barrel. I actually think it improved the balance, and improved the looks. Kinda upset I let it go...

I have no idea why someone would need more than 4 rounds in a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun mag tube and I actually used mine for years as my main defense rifle while working in remote wilderness areas and never needed more that 4 rounds actually never needed more than 2...

I put a decelerator pad on it, the screw on kind, it seems to help. I'm using h4198 as a powder, and will be testing my loads this weekend!

We'll see how it goes.....
