Marlin 45-70. How do I get a good one???

If i was to buy a new one online let say at Epps i would not mind a 25.00 picker fee so he could eyeball 5 or 10 move the action and send me the one that the fittess... JP.

That's what Ellwood supposedly has done with mine, hand picked for fit and finish, looked for the post remington flaws, test fired as well to check for proper feed and ejection. Well let you know when it arrives.

I bought mine yesterday, after I selected the one I wanted they went and test fired it as well as checked feed and ejection. It passed with flying colours. I went and shot it as well last night (my club is behind Epps) worked great for me.

I was browsing at the gun shop yesterday and noticed the guy next to me was handling a new 1895G. He was inspecting it carefully, and when he worked the lever it stuck open a couple of times. He reefed it closed, and it made some sickening scraping sounds inside. Then he cycled it a bunch more times, and the scraping sounds gradually quietened down some. He bought the rifle, but I wouldn't have. Lever rifles just shouldn't sound like that, IMO.

A friend of mine just bought a new Winchester '86 lightweight lever in a 45-70 and we shot it last weekend. What a great gun! Ballance was just like my old 94 in 30-30. Bluing and wood looks great, action is smooth and I was surprised that it's made in Miroku Japan!
There's only one problem..... it was $1150! :bangHead:
Maybe, like alot of other things, it's a "get what you pay for" thing?

So, if you don't spend the $25 picker fee, you'll be getting a picked over gun. What kind of scam is this? Pay an extra $25 or get the runt of the litter. Doesn't sound fair, but then again, nobody has ever told me life was fair. Almost worth the 8hr. round trip to hand pick, or do they charge for this, too?

I just bought a stainless guide gun today.I checked a few gun shops and the ones on the rack all had flaws, the sites were crooked on three of them and the checkering on the forend of one was just a mess.I stopped at Wholesalesports and asked to see another one from the back because I didn't want a gun with crooked sites. The guy found one in the back and took it out of the box and this gun was perfect, the wood was beautiful lots of figure in the wood, the wood to metal fit was tight, the sites were mounted strate on the barrel, the trigger didn't have any creep in it,I couldn't find a flaw in this rifle.I brought the gun home and it shoots great, the action is smooth and it feeds the shells and ejects them with no trouble.Marlin still can make a nice rifle but you might have to handle a few to find one.I would not order one of these guns unless you can see it in person and handle it.The odds of getting a bad one is to high.

Ask to see all the specific rifles you are interested in and give them a thorough going over. I bought a GBL in the spring and had the employee bring every GBL they had in stock out. He came back with 6 and I hand picked the one I wanted. I have had no problems with my Marlington, she shoots like a dream. Take your time on choosing one and you won't be disappointed.
