Marlin 60 vs 10/22

Does the 10/22 warrant the extra dough it costs over the Marlin 60? Are Marlin 60s good, reliable rifles?
I'm also looking at the 597s but hear bad things about Remington's low end (though I love my 870 and 700)

Depends on what you are looking for.

If you are just looking for a bone stock plinker and gopher hunter than the 60 and the 10/22 will both be good.

-They shoot about the same amount of accuracy.
-They both have time proven and simplistic designs.
-The 60 has last shot hold open which the 10/22 does not.
-The 60 holds 15 in the tube mag and the 10/22 holds 10.
-The rugers mag is detachable and there are many high cap mags available for them.
-The ruger has way more aftermarket parts to customise to your hearts content.

You heard right about the 597. It does not have a stellar track record and given the choice I would pick the 60 or the 10/22 over either.

ive never owned a model 60 but ive had 2 10/22s. the 10/22 was an amazing gun and i regret selling both of them. i have been looking at the model 60SS as a new plinker. either way you wont be disappointed.

ps. if anyone has a model 60SS for sale, iv be more than happy to take it off your hands lol

Marlin's are excellent rifles. Really accurate. I have owned a model 70.

But I went with the Ruger 10/22 and never looked back as there was no modification/after market upgrade potential on the Marlin.

If you are going to leave the rifle stock and maybe just add an optic and do not care about a detachable/high cap mag both are super choices.

My son owns a Marlin MODEL 60,bought the cheap $168.00 rifle from S.I.R came with a crappy airgun scope which was not installed.Other then we had to sand the stock down to a more appealling design it is a great little rifle.His cousin owns a 10/22 which is a nice little gun too,but myself I prefer the Marlin,seems to out shoot the Ruger with any ammo,has yet to jam(the 10/22 stove bolts CCI Blazers quite often).The Ruger has better factory sights,is lighter and easier to load.But like I said the Model 60 is half the price ,very accrate and shoots most any ammo without jamming and I prefer the porportion of the 60 with heavier barrel and longer stock,also like the last shot hold open.I believe either rifles will serve you well ,just the Marlin 60 for $168.00 from S.I.R is a better value.

I'd personally go with a Marlin 795, 7000 or the Model 60. I'm not partial to tube mags, so I'd lean towards the 795/7000. Note that there are aftermarket accessories available for Marlins, just not in the quantity or quality of those available for 10/22's. For example, ATI makes a dragunov-style stock that fits most Marlin rimfires (the rifle in the pic is a model 60, obviously);

Honestly 10-22 is not a bad gun if you haven't try the other gun. Mag release and bolt release sucks big time; action rough like sand paper and 5 out of ten jam like crazy. If it is that good you won't see them sell at the EE forum. All aftermarket parts was designed to fix 10-22 problems. Had one 10-22 and sell it quick. I will go for a Marlin semi anytime. Just my 2 cents and is not intend to upset any fellow gunnutz.

The 10-22 is a pretty good little gun that has a lot of potential if you want to spend the extra money to make it whatever you want somewhere down the road. Not many others you can do this with 10 years from now.
