Marlin 795 cleaning question

I'm about to clean my brand new Marlin 795 for the first time and I was wondering if I should bother using a cleaning rod or if I should just use a boe snake?
This is also my first rifle and first time cleaning.

I use a Patchworm from 20/20 Concepts. Great system. (IMHO) I've got them for 22 and .17, as well as the abrasive felt "plugs" for .22. Very effective in my experience. I prefer to clean the bore from the receiver forward, so I never use a rod in my 795. Personal preference.

My pal swears you don't ever need to clean the barrel on a .22 rifle once you have found the ammo it likes best. He showed me how cleaning the barrel affected accuracy till the barrel breaks in again after cleaning using the right ammo for about 50 rounds again. This was all done over a Rest at 50M .22s don't use jacketed bullets so the only thing left behind is a little powder residue. The ammo isn't fast enough to lead the barrel. I didn't believe it either till he proved it to me in a 1022(not very accurate usually) and a CZ 452 (which is accurate).
