Marlin 795 or Ruger 10/22, what should i get?

I don't like rodded out 10/22's so I'm a troll......neat.

Edyshok, if your not real real sure about the two rifles, also take a look at the Remington 597. They come in a few different flavors and are in your price range. If you do a search on this site, you'll see when they first came out, they had a few problems (mostly with the magazine) but guy's generally really like them now that the kinks have been worked out. Also, there is a bit of an after market for them, nowhere near as deep as the 10/22, but much better then any Marlin after market support.

When I bought my 10/22 the decision came down to the 10/22 or the Remington 597. The mag problem in the Remington at the time (about 2 years ago) made the decision easy. It's not such an easy choice these days.

I almost forgot about the 597, good recomendation Rancheroman.

Well, ok after short consideration I prolly will move on with Ruger 10/22 Standard, it does has good reviews from users and pros, so do marlin (marlin may be later, who knows?) Remington 597 is not my gun, i have seen a few, no feelings for it. Thank you all.

Ok, one more stupid question... can I fire hyper-velocity .22 ammo in ruger 10/22, and should I clean bore of my new rifle before actuall start using it? (I mean first time only) it seems to be has some oil on it. Thanks!

Yes. You just can't fire CCI Stingers in the 10/22 target rifle because the case doesn't fit the match chamber. Test all different types of ammo to see what your 10/22 likes best. Mine shot better groups with standard velocity.

Clean the bore first. Who knows what got in there at the factory. It's always good practice to verify that it's clean and free of debris.

Thanks, yeah, will do some cleaning, will try some hyper-velos too :D

i like the 10/22, i have had a lot of 22s & the little bit more you pay is worth it, ruger makes good firearms. if in the future you want some extras you can buy them any where. the best accessories are a couple of hicap mags & a butler creek loader. good shooting.

I started with a Marlin, sold it and replaced it with a 10/22. Best move I ever made, the Marlin jammed up all the time, was picky about ammo, and felt cheap. IMO 10/22 is the better gun.
