I'm looking for an entry level .22LR. Does anyone own any of these 2?

Are they OK? Which is better?

Can a Marlin 795 fit a scope? My wife wants to shoot it too and mentioned she would like a scope on it. The Savage comes with scope but one reviewer said it destroyed his magazines over time. A reviewer for the Marlin said something about limited options to attach a scope to the rifle.

I know 10/22 Ruger is the gold standard but it's not entry level enough.

I had a marlin 795 and it was a great 22. Very accurate and just as if not more reliable than the 10/22. Very light rifle but still has a heavy ish barrel to keep it accurate. Not bad to take down and clean. There is very little for aftermarket stuff but I don't think most people care. The factory stock works just fine. You can also have 25rd magazines. Bet the 10/22 can't do that (I just died a little inside). The only reason I sold mine was because I decided an sks would be more fun for plinking. Would buy again if I desired a semi auto 22lr.

I did put a scope on it. I bought the cheapest 22lr scope at P&D and it fit no problem. It was a Bushnell that came with the rings and a cleaning kit. The factory iron sights were ok. I took a round file and widened them which did help a little bit.

It's no question, the Marlin is what you need. Scoping is no issue either. Very accurate, easy to clean, etc. The down side to entry-level guns (especially semis) is that the iron sights suck, and the trigger is heavy. If you're scoping your Marlin, no problem with the sights. If you decide you want to tweak the trigger on your Marlin when $ allows, Google MCARBO. Great company, easy upgrade.

I've had about 4-5 semis over the years (Marlin, Ruger, Winchester) and only my blued Marlin 795 remains. I'm more of a bolt gun guy, but if it's going to be a semi...it's going to be a Marlin for me. I like the Marlin 60s too, but loathe tube magazines. The 795 is the same gun, only fed by box mags of course.

Marlin. Just a good, accurate, reliable rifle.

It can grow with you, as well. I have a Boyd's stock, DIP trigger and trigger guard, 3-9x scope, bunch of 25 round (actually 27 round) mags for it... Really slays them in the gopher patch.

The "modding" community for 795's is big and growing. Tons of YouTube videos out there on trigger jobs and other tweaks.

I have both a 795 and a Savage 64 F. I'm happy with both. Both are accurate and reliable.

I would not buy the FXP package without looking at the scope first. You might want to buy the rifle by itself and then buy a better scope separately.

If you are looking for a kick ass low cost semi auto, consider a vintage Savage 6 or Stevens 87. At $100 to $130, those totally rock.

I installed a mcarbo trigger in my marlin 60 and love it. Fairly easy to install (took about 1/2 hr) and brought the weight from about 8 lbs down to about 3 1/2lbs and greatly improved accuracy.

I think we have left out a great gun off of the budget list and it's the 597 Remington.I bought one a few days ago from the EE for 225 dollars and it came with 7 mags. This thing out shoots all my prior semi's .Browning Norinco copy, Marlin 70, Ruger stock 10-22.Left a single ragged hole at 30 meters sighting it in for the first time, and it's trigger breaks at 4 pounds.Didn't have any failures of any kind and went bang 200 times without error.I think it is better quality than the Savage or the Marlin 795.Robust firing mechanism with duel guide rods and a beefy extractor makes this a very reliable platform.Have a look it's a heavy Barrel target model. http://s144.photobucket.com/user/gandalfe_photo/media/IMG_0026.jpg.html

Marlin for sure love mine

I had a Savage 64TRR-SR as I really like the stock design but and wasn't too happy with the accuracy of it so I sold it off . I just bought a 795 off the E.E to do the Project Mapleseed with and hope its a better gun. I am looking eventually upgrading the stock to a Boyds Varmit thumbhole , MCarbo springs, DIP trigger , charging handle and trigger guard .
