One more review of a budget plinker for you.
So I purchased a marlin model 795 today at my local outfitter for $189.99. Externally the rifle had a blued finish with what looks like a well-fitted polymer stock. I had heard great things about the stock barrel in these units when compared to the 10-22 barrel and I wasn't disappointed. The 10 round magazine is nickel plated, and while the last two rounds required serious finger strength to get in there, it looked like it would be able to take some abuse. I imagine with some work-in time that will get better. The barrel is hefty and had 16 microgrooves and a very shiny bore. Groupings for even the novice shooters that day were surprisingly good. The wife was a can killing machine. When I managed to get a mag in I ran out of cans to shoot real quick so i was nailing an old propane tank at over a hundred yards no problem. I when get to shoot at a paper target, after i realized the top of the front sight was whited, i stopped aiming too high and put all my rounds in the bullseye or first ring @ 40 yards or so.
Unfortunately after a couple boxes of american eagle 36 grain the rifle had a hangup on what appeared to be a cartridge. Pulled the cartridge out and noticed the firing pin was still extended and the bolt would not move. Whuh-oh, that looks like its bent.
Took it back to my local Outfitter and says he's never seen one of these guns come back with warranty issues before. I guess i'm just lucky. Sounds like marlin is going to ship him a new one and he can just give me one from his stock. easy peasy.
So all in all, I give this little plinker;
Pro's;
-cheaper than a night out with your wife.
-durable stock.
-decent iron sights
-More accurate than any other 200-ish dollar rimfire ive ever shot.
-average to good trigger
-nice and light (compared to my dads's old .22's anyways)
-no fuss warentee replacement if needed.
Cons;
-word from the store is that these are reliable, my experience was different.
-Seems like really lightweight stamped bolt carrier and bolt. but maybe im just used to my dads old .22's that had heavy milled parts.
-dovetail scope mount looks like if you use it it will break right off, but id have to try it to be certain.
Score
4 out of 5 burrito's. Would be 5 burrito's if it didnt break nearly the second i tried to use it. Consensus is that this one was a freak tho.
