Hey guys, this might be the last thing holding me back from getting one of these econo/super lightweight rifles. I'm wondering if they'll cycle subsonic ammo. and if not, is there any simple mod (cutting a coil or two off the spring?) that will make it work?

Feel free to chime-in with your opinions on this gun and/or info. on what you use yours for.

Thanks!

My model 60 is built with the same action and it cycles cci standard velocity ammo which is subsonic. Has never failed me due to light loads yet but I haven't tried the super slow stuff.
Most semis won't, but marlin seems to have their shnit together. Remember you can always make it shoot slower ammo more efficiently by polishing the bolt and bearing surfaces with oiled 400 grit wet dry. And even if that fails you can clip off one coil from the spring at a time until it does, but I personally wouldn't clip the spring because regular speed ammo would be a little too much in the recoil force dept and over time could damage the recoil bumper in the rear of the action.

In short... It will cycle ammo as slow as standard velocity, which is subsonic no problem. As you get closer to 1000fps you may have problems overcoming the spring tension. But from experience, the marlins will cycle more types of ammo, more reliably, than any other factory production semi out there. If the marlin won't cycle them... Nothing short of a custom gun specifically tweaked for subsonics will.

For what it's worth, I'd say buy it! My 60 is by a long shot the most accurate semi 22 I have ever seen out of the box an will easily group under 1/2" at 50m with a cheap 4x bushnell banner and cci standard velocity ammo. The model 60s and 795s are well built little guns that defy their price tag BIG TIME!

Well, that's what keeps me interested in getting one. Semis are at the bottom of my list of "preferred" actions, so I'm not keen on spending much on one. I've yet to hear a bad review/personal anecdote about them though, so I've moved from. "why get one?" to a "why NOT get one?"

I've never stripped one down, but have lots of experience with 10/22s. About the same effort? I wouldn't be against having 2 sets of springs, one for target outings..one for hunting.

Thanks for the input guys, keep it coming!

Why didn't you just ask me? Lol. I have tried standard velocity rounds that cycled fine.

I am not familiar with the field stripping of a 10-22, but it is very straight forward. Remove the action screws which take out the trigger guard (as well as the trigger group) and the stock comes off pretty easily. Take the charger out and then the guts of the action by pulling it down and forward. The spring and the guide rod will come out too. Be careful when reassembling the first time, as the spring doesn't want to seem to co operate until it is loosened up a bit, and mine bent a tad, but still works 100%.

Hope this helps.

That reflects my sentiments EXACTLY! tilting block martinis and bolt actions are my favorite for accuracy and levers for fun. Semis... i had never owned a semi that was very accurate nor totally reliable, and i've gone through quite a few. but i decided to give the model 60 a shot after hearing all the rave reviews. These marlins are impressive little machines.

I put 500 rounds through it two weeks ago with not one single jam, partially due to a lucky batch of ammo i think but nevertheless.. and no kidding the accuracy was exactly on par with my 925 bolt action, which is WAY more accurate than any factory semi .22 has any right to be. With a 4x scope it will group the same as my martini does with target sights, only semi automatically! what more could i ask for out of my camping/bush gun.

If you're at all still on the fence, I'd say just buy one... if you arent pleasantly surprised i'd be pretty surprised.
