I much prefer wood stocked rifles with blued barrels.

But I love my little Papoose because... What the heck, I can take it anywhere, if it gets beat up a bit, so what? Plenty accurate for gophers out past 50 yards.

And an advantage of the Papoose/795, or 10/22, or whatever semi-auto .22 you decide to go with, is magazines. Loading up the tube mag in the field is a bit of a hassle, even with the soda straw trick.

 
I'd argue that; I had a Marlin 60 that I built a set of quick loader tubes for out of 3/8" brass tubing, and a quiver for them that hung off my belt from a coat hangar and a piece of old denim. I could reload that thing very quickly indeed, and could carry ~300 rounds on my hip at a cost of $40 and some elbow grease.

Plus you don't have that 10" banana sticking out the bottom of the gun. 16 rounds in the tube is pretty good.
 
I could cram 16 in my modern m60. Load 14 in the tube, chamber a round and could get 2 more. If you load the tube on a closed bolt you can fit 15. In the one I had anyway.

The 795 is a awesome little gun. i love mine. My brother bought a 10/22 the same time i picked up my marlin and we of course went straight to the range see whos was better. Both guns function flawless, and we were both suprised with the marlins accuracy (it did a bit better than the ruger). The marlin feels very small though and surely isnt as pretty as the ruger but for the price difference there is no question IMO. A friend of mine just got a remington 597, good price and feels real good against the shoulder, built like a tank too, worth a look for sure.
 
loved mine sold it because i found the fore end too skinny for my meaty mitts but there are stocks now available if this is a concern so im getting another

What pushed me over the edge to pick up a 795 the other day (haven't shot it yet) to go with my Papoose, is that when I did the math, I realized I could buy the gun and a Boyds stock for about the same money as you can get a base 10/22.

Starting to see more accessories, in general, for the 795.
 
My first gun was a Marlin 795. I was very frustrated breaking it in because it would always jam (FTF's) with any rounds used, be it cci, winchester, remmy's... so forth. Once I worked out the quirks, it was a great shooter till I sold it. Still a great gun for the price, even after hearing mixed reviews.
 
Awesome little rifles, noticeably lighter than a 10/22 and quite a bit more accurate. 100% reliable with what ever you feed it. Bought one for my girlfriend last week and other than the magazine being a little harder to extract for her she loves it, and kicking my ass at 75 yard shotgun hull shooting. Shot this with it at 25yards using cci sv. I can out shoot my 1022 with it all day even with a trigger twice as heavy and squishy.

Looking forward to taking my brand new Marlin 60 out shortly. I've been down the 1022 road at least 6 times and have always been disappointed especially with the accuracy. So hoping the Marlin is better. Have found out over time that a .22 rifle definitely shoots more accurately after 1000 rounds or so. Not sure why. I have a Savage Heavy Barrel for the more serious shooting. Just want the Marlin to be better than my past 1022s. Same action as the 795 but tube feed instead of magazines.

I'm sure you'll like it. I now have 2 x 795s as of this week. Added a stainless. :) I like the look of the 60 more, but prefer box mags over tube mags. I'd like to eventually add a 60 to the collection though. :) My first 795 could shoot circles around my 10/22, and it cost about 1/3 as much. Sold the Ruger, never looked back.

OK. I've put over 300 rounds through my Model 60. Very happy with it. Finally took it apart for a good cleaning today. Where the stock fits under the barrel it is even nicely finished. The stock I mean. Not so on any 1022. Yes it is way more accurate than I expected and feeds everything. Also holds 16 rounds if you load one in the chamber. The laminate stock looks good too. All for $179. I had heard a rumor that Marlin quality had slipped over the last few years. This .22 rifle is too good to pass up. Everybody should run out and get one.
 
I've shot the 10/22 the 795 and Rem 597 quite a bit.
Owned three 10/22's over the years in different configs and sold them all just as quickly.
I've settled with the Rem 597 after it all.
There aren't any bells and whistles or lazers to attach to it or 300 round drum mags available etc but a bone stock 597 with a $60 set of open Tech Sights that I now own has been the most reliable and accurate out of the box semi auto 22 I have shot yet. Got it shipped to my door new in the box second hand for $200! Will never buy another .22 rifle.
Shoots any ammunition. even had it out during the cold snap at around -30 with the wind and didn't have a single stoppage even with junk bulk ammo. The barrel is thick and heavy, almost looks like an aftermarket add on.
I honestly bought it with a lot of skepticism and after one trip out with it to zero the Tech Sights I placed on it (and a couple hundred rounds later) I was in love!
Just another recommendation Sir for what it's worth if you're considering it.
