Hey guys...thinking of picking-up a used one but was wondering if anyone here has one, how they like it, what ammo it prefers, etc. I've read some reports (on RFC) about some feed problems some of them have. Also, I've read that they tend to prefer the 20gr. JHP ammo. I'd prefer a rifle that shoots the 17gr. ammo best, so really...I'm on the fence a little. Would love to hear from anyone who has one.

Thanks!

I have the VSF and LOVE it. It is the most accurate 100 yard rifle Ive ever seen or shot. It needed trigger work or the trigger kit when I got it, but when that was done... wow. I have a target shot at 100yrds one morning, with a three shot group that is a tiny cloverleaf hole right on the center X. No feed problems with mine and it loves the 17gr. It prefers some brands of ammo over others.

Thanks for the input guys, greatly appreciated. This week, I picked-up a BEAUTIFUL Savage HMR from another CGN member...first (crappy) picture of it below. On the day I made an offer on this rifle, I got a text from the fellow selling the Marlin saying he was going to keep it for his son. So..it was fate. :) Anyhow, thanks again to those who chimed-in...but the latest addition to the family is another Savage. :) If it shoots 17gr. like my previous Savage HMR did, I'll have no complaints whatsoever!

Nice pick up 22lrguy. What glasses are you giving it

You mean that fixed 3x Scopechief hanging right behind it wouldn't be a good choice? lol (that'll be on my daughter's Rascal soon) Thanks HTH, I'm pretty thrilled with it. I'm looking at a Hawke Varmint SF, 6-24x. Option #2 is a Vortex Crossfire II 6-18x which would be enough power too. I have a CF II (4-12x) on my Marlin 17M2 and I like it, thought I might give the Hawke a chance though...I've heard they're pretty good for the money. I'm a .223 guy when I varmint hunt though, so the scope price needs to reflect how much I'll use the rifle. Wish all my rifles could wear a Vortex Viper HS like the .223 does!

BACK to the Marlin 917V, I have one in 17 HM2. It is very accurate and I like the idea that although the range is a bit shorter than the 17 HMR, the cost of the ammunition is about half. I have regularly used it out to 150 yards and more, and the little round has suprised me with it's effectiveness on a very large Raccoon and several Coyotes. I bought mine used but it had been a prize and had not been fired, so it really was a new rifle. I do carry it when shooting Gophers, and if it happens that a Gopher is a bit out of range for the .22 LR, then the 17 HM2 comes out of the truck for a few minutes.

I hear you. I picked-up a 17M2 this past fall (the same gun)...I simply love it. I've yet to hunt anything with it, but for the money (talking ammo cost) I really think it's the most "bang for the buck" you can get in a rimfire. I know the HMRs get a little expensive to feed, but as much as the new Savage deserves lots of time in the sun...it won't see a ton of action in the foreseeable future. Bugging my buddies near Calgary to forget chasing coyotes so much and concentrate on getting some more gopher spots! You know....so I can take my 17s out there from Ontario and have a little fun! lol Anyhow, I had posted about my 17M2 and I can truly say I don't own a rimfire I like more than I like the 17M2 Marlin; http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...ging-my-username-to-17M2GUY&highlight=17M2Guy
