Hey All,

I have been looking around for gopher guns and a decent plinker. I have been looking mostly at 22's but then i noticed a nice 17 hmr. WSS website says they have a sale on the Marlin 917V, could pick one up with a scope for 239. Wondering if anyone has experience with this gun. Looking for pros/cons or any info you may have!

A couple of years ago I bought a stainless steel laminated stock 917 in .17 HM2 calibre. Did a little work on the trigger to smooth it out a bit and drop the pull weight but it is a nice rifle, accurate and smooth operating.

This one was new and the seller won it so the price was reasonable. I do like it because it is an effective little cartridge, and ammo costs about half of what the .17 HMR does.

I have a 917VR - it's scary accurate. I can cover groups with a twoonie at 150yds on a still day.

But the trigger is junk and the stock feels cheap. I did a little trigger mod and it's better, but this year I'm upgrading to a rifle basix trigger and new stock.

Great gun for the money - but know that you're probably going to spend a bit getting it where you really want it. Still, for an extra $230ish you can have a great gun and even without the aftermarket bits it's pretty good.

I don't regret buying mine.
