On YouTube it seems easy to find a lot of old vids on the accuracy of Marlin 22lr - Model 60, 795 or what have you.

Is the Marlin running into after purchase "quality control" issues or are there just a broader scope of rifles to choose from that have the same or better cost/accuracy benifit for 50 to 100 yards.

If you're looking to plink with bulk ammo, the Marlin might be what you're looking for. What is your budget? What do you want to achieve in terms of, say, a five-shot group at 50 yards?

Nowadays, I think they are all very accurate, no matter what the brand. I've had a few Marlin's, and they are no better or worse than say, the Cooey's or Remington's I've used. You can't go wrong with Savage, and a lot of them are made right here in Canada.

I had a Marlin 917V 17hmr, and still do have a Marlin 60. The 17 was very accurate and the model 60 is a tackdriver. It shoots under 1/2" 5 shot groups with cci sv ammo at 50 yds consistently, and is still lots accurate enough even with bulk ammo.Like papaclaude said, I think the majority of them are quite accurate nowadays, but with the luck I've had with Marlins, I'll stick with them.

I've got a newer (within 12 months) model 60 with wood and blued steel.

Great little rifle, though the trigger pull is much heavier than it needs to be. MCarbo (US vendor) sells a trigger kit for the 60, it should improve it a lot.

Mine is quite accurate for a semi-auto rifle that runs less than $250.00. Is it more accurate than a Tikka T1x or CZ 452? I doubt it.

Scope dovetail grooves on the aluminum (pot metal?) receiver are a bit vague, 11mm rings seem to fit the best.

Malfunctions of any kind with CCI SV and Blazer ammo since new (over 500 rds) have been zero, nada, and none.

Bolt stays open after last shot, which was a must for me.

Disassembly and cleaning is easy.

IMO, it's a better rifle than the 10/22 for a lot less money.

The older model 60 rifles are great, longer barrel and higher mag capacity but don't lock open on last shot.

I have a 795 stainless. I've had it about 4 years now. Put a Nikon P-rimfire scope on it. I can hit the base of used 12 gauge shells all day long at 25yards with CCI sv. I got it for something like $215. Lots of fun, 5 out of 5, would buy again.

I know the Model 60 has sent hundreds of thousands of partridge to grouse heaven, so they must have something going for them. The only gripe I had with them, and most of my buddies, was the tube mag. NFG for road hunting.

Really depends of what you wanna do.. My first 22 was a Marlin 60 but hated the trigger pull, tube mag and cheap fealing, its a frankestein rifle inside :)

After that I bought some cz which of course are nicer and more expensive, then bought some 1022 and love them. Mind you it also needed some trigger work and they are more expensive but have zillions of after market part which I personaly like plus I love the rotary flush mag.

I had a 70's issue Model 60, and it was a nice little gun. However, my (and most of my hunting buddies') preference was with the Savage semi - just as accurate, reliable, and it uses a detachable mag. But. guns are like women, cars, and Scotch - there's no questioning druthers.

I put a mcarbo trigger spring kit in mine, and it made a huge difference. I don't have a scale to measure it, but it dropped the trigger by well over half the weight

i can speak for the 795 and the bolt xt and they are very accurate out of the box

Mods to improve Mod-60

HI - I researched a lot on Rimfirecentral.com and MarlinOwners.com Team-60 forums to find tips on improving the action. There are several youtube vids also. Search Y-t for "Arrowdodger" to begin, he has detailed videos. On mine - a 2014 Mayfield 60-I removed the trigger return spring and replaced it with a 're-bent' floppy disc spring. That took over a pound off the trigger. I cut 1/2-coil off the hammer spring and that took about 2# off. I 're-bent' the sear spring and that also took about 1## off. I also polished the Hammer/Sear interface and all other rubbing parts inside the action and lubed lightly with synthetic grease. All of this took the trigger from over 6# down to under 3# !! I put small rubber furniture caps on the bolt handle and the LSHO release (its a very small tab) just to 'soften' them.
I found that with Fed AutoMatch 40g RNL and Fed 36g HP I can keep under 1/2" at 50yds, if I take my time:rolleyes:
