Both rifles were shot with the same load of 40 grains of H4198 under a 420 grain gas checked cast bullet. These shot into an inch and through 6 railroad ties at 100 yds.....................

Marlin 1895 22 inch barrel--chronographed ---1706 fps:)
Marlin GS 18.5 inch barrel--chronographed ---1635 fps:cool:
Next trip out I may be able to chrony the 520 grainers.........;)

I'll try this load through my 32" buffalo classic. 20fps per in * 10 in = 200fps :)

With a 420 grain bullet, 200fps is a ####load more power

Interesting! Identical load except IMR 4198, same 40 grs., 322 gr. gascheck out of my 26" bbl. chronographed 1850 fps. Witnessed by two other GunNutz.
You'd think it would be more given a bullet 100 grains lighter and a 26" bbl.

IMR and HOGDON 4198 powders are NOT the same! DO NOT use the same data!

Who said they were the same? They are however very close and one can even find their burn rates reversed both in various charts and as suggested in different manuals. When working well below maximums as in the above example there is no risk whatsoever in substituting data.
Note that I highlighted IMR and the bullet weight to indicate that there were differences. The main point being that the difference between bullet weight, powder charge and velocity combined with barrel length seems a bit inconsistent.

ive found imr vs Hodgen 4198 to be about 3 grains diferance from 40- 46 in my load velocities. using a 405grain HARD CAST gas check in my GG H4198 @ 43grain cronies at 1800ish fps .. 40 g of the IMR is about the same speed. this is with MY gun though so do the loads and see with yours.
also the manuals are way off on the velocitys for these loads so ive noticed by some times a good 200-300 fps so i take there load data witha grain of salt tbh. because with a 300fps dif there is probably a whole lot of pressure difference as well

my 2c..
ps ive found the H4198 to be verry acurate with a gas checked bullet aswell.

I was thinking of newbies reading your post. No slight intended.
Hogdon, and IMR 4198 are enough different to get a person into trouble when working up a max load. Particularly one of those 'start at max my gun is strong enough' idiots.

None taken. Trading good b.s. keeps me off the street and mostly out of trouble.:)
