marlin guide gun question...

Have you dry fired it yet? If so, the gun is probably badly damaged and should be replaced.....and it just so happens I buy those severely damaged guide guns.................lolDry fire away.

you cannot dry fire a centerfire

a 45/70 isnt capable of deer hunting

a 45/70 isnt capable of short range targets

Yikes! have not being wearing my steel toe boots when firing my .45-70.

Anyway my favorite load for my NEF single shot (will work in your guide gun) is a hard cast (lee mold) flant nosed 405 grain bullet load with AA2495 52 grains at 1800 fps. That gives you a tlayor knockout value of 47. More than enough power for north american game.

According to Jim Carmichael, gun writer for Outdoor Life, the benefit from dry firing, outweighs the potential damage that it might cause. I know many trap shooters use snap caps for dry fire practice. And note that spring air guns should never be dry fired.
