Hey, I'm curious about the Marlin guide guns, most likely a 45-70. Their pro's are boasted here left right and center...aside from kicking like a horse, is there any particular weakness? Anyone ever had one let you down or anyone broken one by accident? Thanks for your feedback,

Marlin guns

Hey Duke, I have had lots of Marlin guns from 35 Rem, 30-30, 444 and lots of 45-70's.The current stainless guide gun I have has never given me any grief.:D Buy one, the kick is nothing compared to a .458 Win.:dancingbanana:

Republic has it bang on, you put the guide gun in a leather scabbard and pack it around a bit, then pull it out and 9 times out of ten that fricken safety is on. Do the o-ring trick and you'll have it licked.

I am on my third guidegun. I bought this one two months ago and have 200 rounds of hard cast down range. It is very reliable.

The Marlin 95's are pretty reliable as they come........I've had and shot 4 of them and never had a failure to feed or extract with any of them.
Even shot some loads through one that were well........abit "Hot"

There are a few aftermarket pieces that may "improve" the reliability of one's 95 but mostly these are piece of mind" add ons as they are tough enough right outta the box.

All mine were capable of Great Hunting accuracy and certainly can put some Bolt guns to shame at a 100 Meters too:onCrack:

FWIW: the Rubber ring works for the safety but for the 20 bucks get the replacement kit that eliminates it altogether and makes the pin look like a receiver screw head

I like the compact scope on your rifle. What kind is it?

...................Its a Leupold M8 2.5x compact. The quick release rings hold zero perfectly. I have shot 10 rounds with the fiber optic open sights, slap the scope back on and its bang on at 100 yards.

Nice set up. I've got a Leupold 1.5-5x20 in Leupold QR bases and rings on my .35 Whelen but your 2.5 is a lot smaller yet. Looks perfect for the rifle. It also seem like the kind of thing that would be good on one of the more compact Ruger #1's or on an RSI.

Along the lines of putting a scope on the GG (or pretty much any lever action for that matter), and considering the limited range these guns have (maybe 200 yards max, but more like 150) what is the point of a scope at all ? It seems like the wrong application for a scope and more poseur than practical. Opinions ?

I will be walking heavy cover with open sights. The scope will be in my pack. If i come across an animal feeding on a cut or bushline where i can put the stalk on him, i'll get within 100 yards, and slap the scope on.

Otherwise if pushing bush i'll be using the fiber optic open sights where i would need a quick shot. I also like the light transmission on that little Leupold.

Uhh yeah, but what is the point ?:onCrack: Kinda like putting a scope on a 45-70 Sharps (although at least that would make more sense to me)..... !!

..................I place my shots better with a scope at 100 and beyond. You do it your way and i'll do it mine and at the end of the season we can share our stories here.

With 350g er's at 2000fps these are honest 250 yard guns for large moose sized game. I use mine as a tool not a toy. With the scope it makes it that much better. You can be sure that it is no poseur rifle.

But now that you say it the only pics of them that I ever seem to see are nice shiny rifles sitting in the gun room

Here's mine in action

350 gr'ers and 2000 FPS, out to 250 ? What load? Pressure ? All sounds very extreme for 45-70 out of a 18.5" barrel

re: Nice shiny rifles in the gun room....you think ?

Proof is in the pudding...good job !

Have you seen the guy on the internet, posted in another thread, shooting deer at 250 and beyond with his.

I saw an elk bodyslammed at just shy of 200 yrds, with a scoped guide 45 70
The scope was the same one shown earlier in the thread (2.5 - 4 ??? )

I agree that you are definitely doing a good job with using a scope at 100 and beyond. At 100 and beyond, you're talking a hunting shot, most likely not defensive.

To say the adding a scope makes a poseur:confused:  , not adding one cause it's a lever action seems more poseur to me.
ya gotta do what you're gonna make your shots with.

Last moose I shot didn't worry too much if I was using a Leupold,or a Tasco,
Scope or open sights, 303 bubba,or 45 70.

You could always use the scope, and then take it off when you take your pics, and when the people who are in 'the know' are around, just say you made the 200 yrd shot with open sights ;)

mine is not scoped cause I use it solely at 100 or less.
