So I finally got my Marlin 1895 in the mail today :dancingbanana: Its the first Marlin I have ever purchased, and I cannot wait to try her out, since I have never fired a 45/70 before.

Now to my question. With the rifle came this funky lock, does anyone here actually use it ???? Wouldn't a small cable lock be easier. I am thinking I will be using the cable lock I got with my bolt action Ruger years ago. I've never seen a lock set up like this. :confused:

I got the same one with my 47-70 Marlin. It is just another "object" that is sold by marlin and only fits Marlin. Much like all the additions a person can buy in relation to thier guns...better trigger, better barrel, better sights etc. each sold by the mother company . Mine did the deep six as soon as I got it home.
 
just going by the pic, it looks very secure,
as long as one puts a decent lock on it as you have.
If it securely makes the firearm inopperable (sp?)
then it's legal.
I hope that the mechanism is vinal dipped?
 
Congratulations on your new marlin, you'll love the 45/70. I got a 1895g in 45-70 last year and just love it ,in fact it's what got me into reloading and doing all that fun stuff. Mine came with that lock too,but I didn't like it so I turfed it and got a cable lock.....have fun shooting the mini cannon.
 
I second the congratulations, I sure enjoy mine.
That lock is certainly strong piece of equipment and would be a super good locking system. However, it just looked too crude and stuck out like a sore thumb, to suit me. I don't need a lock on it anyway, because it is stored in a safe and I don't need it locked to travel with.
To get full enjoyment from the rifle you should reload. The big cast bullets are accurate at speeds where you shoot, then listen to hear the bullet hit the 100 metre target, and all the way up to where it gives you a mighty wallop when you release the trigger.
It's easy to load for and there is a long list of suitable powders.
 
Great gun ..keep mine in safe and used aluminium case with 4 combo locks lock for transport. Thought that their lock might scratch the firearm hence cable lock might be better.
405 grain cast from Bullet Barn in BC is nice re loading.
 
They give a similar one with 10/22's but with a long shaft pad lock instead of the second piece of steel.

I didn't use it, But the I had an idea for it that could work with that lock as well, to mount it to the wall with countersunk screws then you could lock the gun to the wall with something to support the barrel a little.

I have one on my Handi too and it was interesting to try and figure out how it goes on. Finally got it and it basically locks the action open. The lock supplied will bump the trigger guard and mark it up so I wrapped it with self amalgamating tape to prevent that.

I am happy with it as a temporary lock but the rifle is not convenient to store with the lock on and I am not sure it makes much sense as that is when you would want to have it locked... :confused:

It is, but the supplied padlock is not, which is why I will be using the cable lock Ruger gave me.

Well, I am not reloading ( might start when life slows down) so I will be using that Hornady Leverevolution ammo.


Looks like I am not the only one who thought that was a weird lock set up. Thanks for all the input guys !!
