Just wondering on these units. The 3 boys finally stepped and got their PAL to match the oldest boy so I was thinking of 4 .22's for Christmas. The oldest has one of my single shot 12ga and an SKS so maybe an economical .22 would be a fun way to go and get them out without asking to borrow my stuff!

The 60 I can get $120 cheaper than a 10/22 and $25 cheaper than a 597. I have an aversion to Remmy but since they own Marlin I'm kind of stuck. Tube mag bugs me a bit too but it's all good once your used to it... They are all older and long flown the coop so they all need one of course! ;)

$480 savings before taxes on 10/22's certainly has me thinking and if they have a good rep with accuracy it will be a sealed deal.

The 795 has detach mags and are usually cheaper. I've noticed many marlins have crooked front sights so I refuse to order one just in case
They are accurate from the older ones I've shot

My 60 is very accurate and reliable. I actually bought it for my grandson but hes lost interest. I have put Boyd's stock and mcarbo trigger spring kit in it but bone stock it was still quite accurate. The grandson could hit empty shotshells at 50 yds every shot and when he got bored with that he started shooting at empty 22 brass. He was hitting them 6 or7 times out of 10.

I would do it. With the Marlin 60's you'll spend your time at the range or in the bush shooting. With 10/22's, you'll spend your time clearing FTFs, FTEs, light strikes, and stovepipes.

Your mileage may vary, but that's been my experience with stock 10/22s.

I like the model 60s, but since I've lost all interest in tube-mag-fed rifles...I'm a "795" guy. They are inherently accurate for sure, but being econo guns...the triggers are a bit on the heavy side, sights cheap and often crooked. I planned to scope mine anyway, and the MCARBO trigger kits really are a nice addition for what they cost. Right out of the box, these guns just shoot though...so I think a Marlin is a nice choice.

I should add~the only way I'd personally consider a 60 over a 795 would be if I hunted with them...something like squirrels where there isn't allot of reloading. I tend to shoot much higher volume be it on targets, on gophers...whatever. A tube mag is a royal PITA in cases like that, at least for me.

I would get them each a different one. They will all share them and get to experience the differences between the rifles, and it will help them learn how to use different systems, and let them figure out what characteristics they like in a gun

The Ruger 10/22 should be renamed the jamamatic. I tried a new 10/22 and SR 22 and got rid of them both. Got a Marlin 60 and 795 and haven't had a jam yet using Winchester experts which are large cavity ( for .22 LR ) hollow points

I have 60, 10/22, GSG, 597 all of them but the one EVERYONE loves is my 60 Tube. Simple, Safe and runs like a Champ!!! did i mention its a TACK driver, even after hundreds of rounds no cleaning, still shoots better then I ever coould! heck i am looking for a second now so kids dont have to share and Settle for the other .22 rifles LOL

I like that line of thinking but I don't want any hurt feelings reports of someone getting a lesser unit.......

Thanks for all the positive responses may even try a Model 60SS for myself ;)

Buddy of mine has a 795. He removed the squish marlin and replaced with the Williams sites. Well worth it. they are a huge improvement over the originals. I have an older Glenfield model 60. My 12 year old son has claimed it and thats ok cuz it was on the never sell list.

Don't knock the mag tube,

After a long day of shooting my buddies thumb is covered in lead and sore. My thumb and fingers are gtg.

never seen a magtube that didn't work

Agreed. I prefer mag tubes for a couple simple reason. They are extremely reliable for one, I have NEVER had a fail to feed in any of the marlin 60's I owned, or the mossberg 146 I currently play with. They are super easy on the fingers too, nothing annoys me more than stuffing rounds into a detachable mag with metal feed lips in the winter... they keep the gun low profile, which I like because I've actually had a 795 fall on the floor, not a long drop but I was enough to break the little pot metal magazine guide inside the action. Not something I'd want to happen in the field. And lastly, you aren't likely to lose a tube mag.

Sure they are a little more silly looking to reload, but since I can put 20 rounds in my mossberg I don't need to reload very frequently. The only time I think I'd prefer a detach mag would be if I was shooting hundreds of rounds from a prone rested position. Might be awkward to get up for reloads. Other than that, I'll take a tube mag over box anyday.

I am not a big fan of tube mags myself but, I wanted to say "Way to go Dad, you're awesome."
Firearms are a wonderful choice for presents. You and your family will be able to use them together for years to come.

The only reason I got rid of my 2x 60s is because of a stupid decision then, to thin my already meager 22 rifle collection and concentrate on a few bolties.

Otherwise, I loved my 60s, reliable, accurate and really really especially liked the tube magazine. My 60s as well as the 2x Marlin 981s (tubes too) I had, never had a single failure to feed or eject.

If reloading a tube magazine is putting anybody off due to inconvenient or slow reloading, google Spee D Loader.
Or YouTube search for “tube magazine loaders diy”.

Almost forgot, i recently acquired an old Marlin 81DL. Tube mag of course, blueing a little worn in some spots but mechanically sound. Nice Walnut stock!

I used to be magazine only but after a day punching paper with a 10/22 now 1/2 my 22s are tube feed( just keep careful count of rounds)

Owned severl 10/22s.
Quite reliable and function well but like most ruger products overpriced for what you get.
Recently acquired a 10/22 takedown with a black modular stock and heavy barrel with disappointing accuracy.
It will be finding a new home soon if it doesn't 'smarten up'.

m 60 FTW!!!

1/2 inch groups to 1 inch depending on how im shooting at 50.

Spit CCI like no ones business... Worked great on tree rats! Love the little guns!

Question for those of you that own a 60.. does the bolt stay open on the last shot? Separate and second question, can you lock the bolt open so the rifle is visibly "safe" on a bench?

fine ill be that one guy.
I picked up a Marlin 70PSS last year and its the biggest turd of a 22 i've ever owned, and that is saying a lot because ive owned a LOT of 22's over the years.
keep in mind all guns manufactures are going to put out a lemon from time to time.
but comparing my 70PSS to my Ruger TD id go Ruger every day and twice on Sunday.

of course the guns im talking are the take down versions of the normal guns and the 70 isnt the 60.

for what your talking about - picking up 4 guns in one hit - i think your on the right course.
they are cheap and they should work, really what more do you need?
for the price point your talking you are not buying guns to display on the wall, you want them to go bang when you hit the trigger.
for all accounts the tube feed will bypass 99.9% of the problems with most modern 22's and that is the magazine causing issues.
