I have a Marlin Model 93 Carbine in .32 Special calibre with the carbine ladder site and was hoping someone could tell me when it was made. It is serial number 54XX with no letter prefix and has the bullseye on the bottom of the buttstock. The person I got it from said his Grandfather bought it in the 30's but I can't confirm that. I have tried looking on the Marlin site but unable to date it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I think the 1893 became the model 93 around WW1 and was made until the model 36 was introduced in 1936. I am no Marlin expert but your gun was probably made before the 1930's. There are a few Marlin collectors on here and will show up soon to correct me maybe.

Marlin 93

Unfortunately I don't have a camera or pictures yet. One more thing I can add--the barrel is marked 'Marlin Firearms Corporation' and from researching I found that this marking was supposedly only used until 1924 and then it was changed to 'Marlin Firearms Co' Hope this helps in dating it.

A friend of mine says that if your 93 is stamped Marlin Firearms Co and has a bullseye in the stock it is post 1930 but before 1936. Does it also have a star stamped on the tang?

According to The Standard Catalog of Firearms - "in 1919 the markings were changed to 'The Marlin Firearms Corporation/New Haven Conn.U.S.A.Patented'. There were approximately 900,000 manufactured between 1893 and 1935."

The model 1893 Marlin's name was changed to the model93 in 1906. However due to a large amount of 1893 marked actions on hand the 93 marked Marlins did not show up on the market until after WW1. These rifles are in an entirely different serial number range than the early rifles. Besides that the rifle shown was not even thought of in 1883, the 32 SPECIAL was not produced by anyone prior to 1902. Marlin serial numbers are confusing to say the least but the OP's gun was made after 1922 and probably before 1930.

Okay,we have determined it was made somewhere between 1922 and 1930. Is it possible to get any closer to the actual manufacture date? I know there is a pile of Marlin owners out there who are very knowledgable about these old toys!!!! The serial number is 54XX with no letter prefix. The serial number is on the bottom tang if that helps. It has the ladder rear site and the carbine stock and buttplate .
