Just an update on an old thread:

I purchased a Marlin Papoose new in March 08, and was very impressed with the little rifle's accuracy and reliability out of the box. I was disappointed that no matter what I did, I couldn't get a telescope to stay put on the receiver dovetail, but that's another story.

Anyway, by July 08, I had put probably around 750 rounds through the little rifle, when all of a sudden magazines became very difficult to insert and remove, and then wouldn't even engage the magazine catch at all. I diagnosed the problem as being the cheap pot-metal magazine well, which had actually bent to a considerable degree. Internet gurus advised this was common with the Marlin semi-autos, and I should be prepared to get a small stock of these parts.

I wasn't terribly happy that a four month old rifle was broken, so I returned to the retailer (Lock Stock & Barrel In New West) to ask about warranty. Gary said he would look into it with the wholesaler.

Anyway, poor Gary has had one heck of a year: After being clubbed in the head during a violent robbery last fall, and then having a portion of his store roof give out during our unusually heavy snow fall, he hasn't been terribly able to be open for business.

I was REALLY impressed when yesterday he brought my brand new, Warranty replacement Papoose to my workplace to deliver to me. THAT is service!:dancingbanana:

In retrospect, I can see how with the tiny (non-existent?) fore end on the papoose, one is prone to pull backwards on the magazines when shouldering the rifle, and no doubt repeated recoil with backwards pressure on the mag would have contributed to the mag well bending, especially with longer 10 rd mags inserted... I sure hope this rifle is as accurate as the last one!

Over and out...

Neal

I'm pretty sure that the pot-metal magazine well piece has been used in all of the detachable box magazine Marlin rimfires, since way back to the pre-history days.

I will happily be corrected by someone with more knowledge than I.
