I have a 1953 Marlin 336 RC that is untapped for scope mounting (yeah) any leads on purchasing a quality peep sight or other options on improving sights without drilling holes ?
Thanks
Doubtful you can get away without drilling, although that is probably only 50 bucks or so. Skinner peep sights seem to be the standard for aftermarket sights
All Marlin 336 should be drilled on the left side of the receiver for peep sights.
Look for Williams 94/36 FP (click adjustable) or 94/36 5D (bump and screw adj).
I guess I'll be looking for a Williams FP, Cabelas, Wholesale Sports and Western Gun Parts have none in stock, I am trying on the EE.
My rifle does not seem to have waffling, is a smooth top normal?
Found this on a website.
"Waffle top" is just a term used to describe the wavy-line matting feature Marlin applied to the tops of Model 336 lever gun frames produced from 1948 thru 1951; which feature was probably thought to reduce glare and thus make it easier for the shooter to more accurately use open sights. There's nothing special about the feature itself, as it was cut onto the tops of all Marlin lever gun frames during this period; but was apparently a feature Marlin had decided was un-necessary by 1952, as it was forever dropped from production from that point forward. For production years 1952-1954, Model 336 frame tops were left smooth; then in 1955, Marlin cataloged all Marlin 336 models factory drilled and tapped for scope mounts, a feature that has remained unchanged since.
Seems like I have a post waffle top, pre drill and tap model
Ebay or http://www.garyfellers.com/ will help you find much better sights than the Williams stuff. A quality old Marlin like that deserves a steel Lyman, Redfield or Pacific sight.
