Just checked this out further, and the Marlin barrel thread is 1.0625, so Savage/Stevens barrels are just a tad undersize at 1.055

However, the Shilen web sight that shows their standard Savage barrel thread as being 1.060 x 20tpi.

It isn't quite that simple. The Savage uses a 1.055" major diameter like many do after they are done. After threading, many will flatten the thread peaks, Savage does this before they cut the threads. This method is very common and helps eliminate a poor fit at the peaks which are not important. Savage does use the proper pitch diameter which is the load bearing diameter and are not undersized. If the Marlin action is 20tpi and uses the proper pitch diameter for 1 1/16" threads, a Savage barrel will fit well.
 
This fellow sent his Marlin to Shilen and had them rebarrel it to a 35Whelen..I would think Shilen would have kept the thread info on the job and that you could just order one thru Jerry..

I have been thinking that a .358 Win. barrel would go good on a Marlin XS7 7-08..Just need for the 7-08 to show up.

Ok here is a good link to check out threads on tools and such for switching these barrels...I have never done this myself and in the back of my mind I seem to remember that not all Sav. barrels have the same shank size.. Jerry would know about this...

So, we now know the Savage wrench works on the Marlin. Great!

The 7mm-08 shoots too good, however I can see the 30-06 becoming a seven pound 9.3X62 XL7 in my future. Just the ticket for packing around after moose and woods bison. :)

It's the pitch diameter that matters,..not the major diameter. Almost no threads are exactly nominal size on the major diameter.....the pitch diameter, measured with wires is where teh real therad dimension is measured.
Just pick up a 1/2" bolt and measure it with a mic or a vernier caliper..it won't be .500"

You are right about the XL7 in a 9.3X62 making a nice Lwt. hunting rifle with all the jam we need here in Canada.. A Woods Bison hunt sounds like fun..
A good friend drew a Bison hunt up near Pink Mt. for Nov... He is taking his Shiloh Sharps and using paper patch and black..
 
Our bison season is open here now in some areas. Will be open in the whole territory on Dec 1. Thats enough time to get this done, and keep my walnut-stocked FN out of the cold. :D

I may be missing something here, but wouldn't it be just as easy to do a 9.3 on one of your Stevens instead? Is the Marlin action that much better?
 
It would be the same job, and they are both about the same, as far as accuracy. However as much as I like the Stevens, the Marlin is a much better rifle: nicer stock, far superior trigger and a real recoil pad! :dancingbanana:

Marg is carrying The Fairy Rifle this fall :), an XS7 in 7mm-08 -- 139 gr Hornady Interlocks and 160 gr Accubonds shoot into less than an inch.

For a minute there I thought that I was going to have to hunt with a paper bag over my head when using a 7-08...:eek:
 
No.. It hasn't come in yet...
They have/had one in town but I put one on order with another dealer whom I thought would get them in first... No big deal as I have a few other rifles to use..
Be sure to post about your Bison hunt.. I saw a few one winter when working near the Laird river right at the B.C. NWT border..Impressive animals..
