Quality is good. There will always be ones that get through but no more than any other manufacturer, and no more than Marlin let through before Remington took over.

I believe Marlin only uses Ballard on their 45-70s now

That'd be good if that's the case. The bullets I've seen shot out of other microgroove Marlin .45-70 rifles show the bullet is barely engaging the rifling.

Shot mine a bit last weekend. Very fun little rifle.

What is the finish is on the barrel, receiver, mag tube, etc?

Before I bought it, I thought it was the same stainless as the SBL, but it's not even close. Seems like more of a hard chrome?
