I just acquired a Marlin Lever that I believe is pre model 39. I am having trouble opening the tube mag.

There is a spring loaded catch that moves freely but then the cap does not. I have tried pulling and twisting with no luck.

I thought I should maybe ask for some assistance before I break something.

Anybody have any ideas about how this magazine should open?

Thanks

Okay, figured out how to open the mag tube. The outer tube slided up over the inner (reverse of the 39A, 1950's vintage)

Now the problem is the mag spring is in the way of the loading gate. I assumed it is supposed to move up to the top of the mag (muzzel end) when the outer tube is slid, but that ain't happening.

Still need some help

In order for the spring to retract with the outer tube, it has to be fastened inside the tube. It either can be soldered in place before the cap was put on or there should be a place where it was crimped inside the tube. If you can manage to get the cap off...it will show you either way.

Thanks Toymaker

Yeah, I was screwing around with it a bit and came to the same conclusion. The question is how best to make the outer tube grab the follower. Time for some tinkering. I had not thought of solder. Hmmm.......

By the way, the mag follower has some impressive ballistics of you have the spring mostly compressed and let it slip. Clear across the basement eh :)
