My father was considering purchasing a Marlin XL7. He called WSS to order one and the lady taking the order said "we have been notifying purchasers of the XL7 that we have been having a lot of returns of these rifles and they have been taking a long time to repair". She was vague on the details of the returns. Obviously he didn't order the rifle, but he was confused because everything he's read about the XL7 has been positive. So...I thought I would ask the guru's if they have been having problems with their XL7's?

What say you? Should he just order a Savage Axis and be done with it? Or ignore the warnings of WSS?

Oh, he was ordering a 7mm-08 by the way.:)

Obviously, the gal was confusing the Marlin lever action rifles with the bolt actions. I own several myself, and every one functions without a hitch, and is very accurate. Have only heard one complaint, and that was an XS7 that had a trigger guard break.

This is an interesting. Perhaps she did confuse them with the XLR series lever actions.

I would not ignore it. I not sure and somone can correct me but once Remington gets there hands on something it all goes down from there. Maybe wait and see what other owners say. Only probably is new guns may be the problem. Maybe look for a used one on the EE or savage product. Savage Axis is cheap to me.

I think you're probably right that this is a case of mixing the good in with the bad. As far as I know, the XL7s are still being made in Remington's Kentucky plant, where they have been for several years. It was the movement of Marlin's lever action production to Remington's New York plant which resulted in many issues and a soiling of Marlin's reputation.

The glowing reviews that the XL7's have been receiving in the last few years have only been matched by the equally "unglowing", downright nasty reviews that Marlin's lever's have receiving. In other words, the WSS gal was almost certainly mistaken.

The only bad thing with the XS7 and XL7 is, like late model ADLs, the trigger guard is plastic and can crack when tourqing the rear action screw. Only issue I ever saw while sending firearms for repair in a large gun shop.

The Marlin lever actions on the other hand have the highest defective rate I've ever seen. Rivaled only by the Rossi Trifecta.

My XS-7 7mm-08 has been trouble free for over 2 years now, now the 336 I bought last year was a steam POS, but, 8 months after sending it back to the gravel agency (they stopped production of the levers while they worked out where they were screwing up apparently) they sent me a new one that functions flawlessly. I'd still stay away from the levers though.

Summary: XL-7/XS-7 = good
336/levers = bad

I think my 7-08 ss is real good for the money, right at the top in the "value brand" category. Only put 12 shots though it so far, 7 shots to sight in and a 5 shot group that was just over an inch at 50 yrds. so looks promising. Most people say they shoot good.
My barrel was from the marlin factory but assembled at the remmi plant from what I understand.

trigger guard of a Marlin 925 will fix your problem.

I've worked with 3 or 4 of them, one of those was in 7-08, and they have all been excellent. I would recommend he go back and buy one. She was confusing Marlin's bolt guns with their levers.
