Well I have finally decided on my first hunting rifle. After extensive research and some range time I am going with the Marlin XL7. In my price range I don't think I can do much better. (Found them new for 359+tax at Wholesale Sports.) I shot one with a boyds featherwieght thumbhole stock and loved it! My question for you guys it two fold:
1- Do any of you have experiance hunting with a stock like this. My Buddy seemed to think it was more for Precision stuff at the range.
2- Has anyone actually installed one of these? Was it easy/ something I could do myself or should i take it to the smith? I do not have any experiance working on guns but can probably figure it out if its not too complicated.
Let me know what you think!

i put my XS7 in .243 in a boyd's nutmeg last year. this one was a finished stock and did require a small amount of inleting. i just had to use a dremel and a little elbow grease with some sand paper. i still need to bed it at some point but shots well as is. i have several actions in boyd's stocks and each needs a little inleting. i have a model 70 super shadow i put into a boyd's that was unfinished and semi inleted and that one required much more work. if you get one pick up the finished version and save yourself some inleting and final finishing.

here's the XS7 in .243 nutmeg

I have an XS-7 in a boyds laminate, it was an easy drop in fit for me, no inletting required. Accuracy is virtually the same as with the stock stock(really freakin good), so I've just left it alone. I don't have the thumbhole so I can't somment on that. I give a big thumbs up to boyds! And thumbs up to the Marlin!

Thanks for the info! The Pics look awesome. How is the boyds recoil pad? Does it compare to the stock version? What are the differences in the XL7 & XS7?

XL7 is the long action version and the XS7 is the short action. the boyds come with a hard rubber recoil pad. it's a far cry from the nice soft recoil pad that comes on the marlins. you could always put a slip on or a grind to fit from limbsaver. limbsaver may have a precision fit one that would fit if you knew of another gun stock butt with the same dementions??? boyds may be able to help you out with that part.
