Marlin XL7??

Me and my dad are considering the Marlin xl7 as our first hunting rifle. I'd like to know what others think of this gun. most of the things i've read have been good.. we will most likely be attaching a Bushnell Elite 3200 regardless of gun choice.

Decent gun. Probably one of the best values out there today. That scope is a good unit as well on a first gun, certainly better than what a lot of new people start with.
 
I bought one in 30-06 from Prophet River not to long ago, and its the best $379 I have spent in a while. It shoots half inch groups @ 100yrds and better if I do my part.

The blind mag sucks, but for that price they had to save some coin somehow on a inexpensive rifle that is a great shooter.
 
i was thinking about getting it in synthetic.. the website says that the xl7 weighs 6.5 lbs. will this be a recoil problem? and what do you mean by blind mag? also is the Pro trigger standard? is it worth it? sorry for all the questions :redface:
 
Blind mags are "Non-emptying" meaning they are a cavity within the rifle for your rounds that have only one entry and exit point........ the top. You can't unload in a hurry like with a drop Magazine or drop out floor plate. If you have a full load of ammo in the gun, you have to chamber each round and eject them. Its a little messier occasionally if they fly away, but often times, not having the bottom of the gun open with another hole, stiffens the action somewhat and may contribute to greater accuracy. Kind of like a convertable car VS a hard top. The convertable looks better, but has more flex and slightly worse handling in the corners because it doesn't have the roof to keep the body more rigid.

What caliber? Just get a good recoil pad if you buy .270 win or bigger. Pro trigger is standard. Seems like its a worthwhile gun by reports I have read.
Synthetic may be a good choice, but try to handle one in wood and synthetic first, as the synthetic may not "feel" right when you shoulder it. Its hard to make pre-concieved choices on guns, as they have to feel right in your hands.
 
How much more is the the wood version selling for??

Here are pic's of my last outing to give you an idea of what this inexpensive rifle can do. Keep in mind, I have not adjusted my scope yet, this is just to find the best groupings. These were at 100yards.

I have not had a chance to see if the flyer in the last pic was common with that amount of powder or if it was my error.
