Hey guys, i need some help, BAD!
here's my issue, Yesterday, i picked up a brand new Marlin .17 XT-17V, heavy barrel rifle. With it i got a couple boxes of .17, one Hornady 20 gn .17HMR, and one box of Remington 17 gn Accutip V Boat tail.... I mounted my Tasco 4x16x40 scope on it today and headed out to zero it!
well, i started out with the Hornady. after about 15 rounds i was getting somewhere, (50 yards), my son shot a dozen or so, but it just wasnt shooting very tight. Now keep in mind, i was running a patch with nitro cleaner through it every 7-10 shots, about 3 soaked patches, then about 5-6 dry.... then shooting some more. we moved the target out to 100 yards, then things got worse....
well, after 50 shots (the box of hornady), I decided to remove the scope, and was going to install a Bushnell Trophy that i had along, to see if that made a difference. It was then that i noticed the mounting blocks on the gun were'nt tight! they were barely finger tight, so the scope was wiggling around, hence things getting (real) bad at 100 yards. So i went home, and dissasembled it, and tightned, and loc-tighted everything. Problem should be solved, right?
So i go back, by then im out of all .17 ammo except a box of Remington Premiere magnum 17gn. .17 HMR AccuTip V bot tail ammo. I put the target out at 50 yards to get an inititial zero, and shoot four shots, and the group is about 12"!!! and everyshot is "key holed" like they went through sideways!, so i try four more and it does the same, the group is hideous, 12" -16" and all keyholed!
I went home and cleaned the heck out of it with nitro cleaner and a bore brush, and many patches, till it came out clean, i thought maybe it was just really fouled up (which it prolly was a bit). I checked the barrel, its fine looking, the crown is fine (recessed)....
I went back out for the 3rd time, and it still does the same thing, even super cleaned! EVERY shot is keyhole'd, and a super bad group, if you can even call it that! is there something wrong with the gun? its brand new! the first shots never keyholed.
could it just be the ammo? (im hoping it is). its too bad i ran out of anythig else. has anyone else experienced this with the Remington stuff?
can someone shed some light on this issue? could it be something else loose on the rifle? (i cant see that)....
please help! man what a disappointing first day. i should have gone over every screw on the rifle before, i dont know what i was thinking, or NOT thinking!
A very sad Ginnz!
