Supposed to be good rifles. I'm more of a Savage guy, but I just bought my second Marlin in as many years...so who knows. I've had an XT17 in my hands 2-3 times and just got cold feet for some reason. Haven't bought any HMR yet...I flip-flop between the XT and a Savage 9317FV.
I have the wooden stock version and I like it. Trigger from factory is about 3lbs but can be brought down to a safe 1.5 pounds with just a spring change. Feeds fires and ejects reliably and its pretty accurate. I ususally shoot cci maxi mag through it. It will do about 1.25-1.5 inch 5 shot group at 100yards with it. It shot the hornady 30 grn stuff really well too, even a little better but its too expensive around here ($20 per box). The other ammo I tried in it (couple of flavors of winchester) grouped poorly. I much prefer the wooden stock over the plastic. Its a great gun for the money.
I don't have the Marlin XT22MR but if it's anything like my 981T it will be a shooter! I have had more expensive and prettier .22lr rifles come and go but I can never see selling the 981T. It's so accurate even with a cheap 3-9x Bushnell.
The stock's not the greatest and not really angled for using the iron sights but suits a scope nicely. Also, I like the "medium" barrel size/weight. (ie. between a "heavy" and "thin" barrel)
I also did the Papermate spring swap but found it too sensitive so went back to the factory spring.
Marlin makes good rifles for little $$
I have the XT in stainless bull barrel .22 mag synthetic stock... It's one of the most accurate rifles I own. I love it! It became my go to gun now. I actually even sold my Mossberg Tactical .22 because I use this one more!
You won't regret the purchase as far as I'm concerned!
