Marlin......

Ben is right - never a 358Win - just 35Rem which is common and the rare Model 336ER in 356Win. Of course the 356Win is essentially a 358win with a 30-30 Rim attached. It shoots .358" bullets and is a big game thumper with 250s. You use 358Win dies to load 356Win. Here's my page on my Marlin 336ER in 356Win - http://35cal.com/photos.html

I can only add that the .356 Win. is a great cartridge in any gun, I have the Win. 94 AE, with a 2 1/2 power scope and it's as good as it gets.

I had the taste buds for a BLR in the 358 but wanted one with the pistol grip or
the non foreward barrel band.
Then the reading on the goofy trigger pull and I just don't like hard pulling triggers.
They sort of pizz me off.
I just aquired a Marlin 336 in the 30-30 and I just adore this lever.
Feels right, shoulders well and the trigger is a pleasure.
I guess one can't make this into the 356?
What would the 35 Rem compare to?
Thanks for the info.
Looky.

.35 Rem is considerably lower in power than the .358 Winchester. Muzzle velocity, 200 grain bullets in each: .35 Rem, 2020 fps, .358 Win, 2490 fps.
I have heard that people have rechambered .35 Rems to .356 and .358 Winchester. And I think your .30-30 can be rechambered to .307 Winchester.
Marlin, of course, had dire warnings about such rechambering. Marlin enthusiasts were told that the .336 rifles in .375 and .356 were beefed up in the receiver. When pressed, they could not or would not elaborate. Hmmmm......

Better guns

What makes you think he would be pleased with an 88?
I sure as hell wouldn't be. I consider an 88 to be a miserable, awkward shaped rifle to shoot.
I don't like them one bit.

??? - Marlin lever guns IMO right up there with lots more spendy ones. Never had an 88 so I got nothing to say about how good or bad they might be. But I sure don't think it's accurate to characterise Marlin levers as some kind of low rent piece for which only someone who is "easy to please" settles. They are very fine rifles with solid hunting DNA (the Remlins of late maybe not so much). I'm a proud Marlin owner and use mine routinely. I got "better ones" which do get out hunting too. But I wouldn't care a bit if I had only a Marlin lever the rest of my days.

Just like to old 30-30 I don't think you'll be unhappy with the 35 rem. I have had 2 or 3 of them and have always kicked my self (and still do) for selling them. I have hunted deer, elk and moose with the 35 Rem, even shot my Bison with the 35 Rem, one shot 200gr Fed blue box 50 yards, right between the eyes.....DRT. I put a set of peep sights on on of my Marlins killed a black bear at 75 yards with the bear on the run. Bear dropped so fast that its azz end kept going and he did 2 summer-salts.

It may not be the biggest in the bunch but it sure is one tuff little bugger. I have one or two more on my to-get list right after my Ruger tang safety 25-06
