A fellow I'm dealing with online says he has a .444 Marlin for sale that has been converted by way of modifying the lifter to accept, feed and fire .44 mag.
Is this possible?

Not much different than shooting 22 short in a 22 LR or 44 Russian in a 44 Mag, but with a wee bit more freebore.

The 444 is essentially a lengthened 44 Mag. Should work OK but will be very hard on brass because the 444 is larger at the base than the 44 mag.

The .444 Marlin is a 2.225", slightly tapered case going from .470" at the base to .453" at the case mouth, while the 1.285" long .44 Mag. is a straight case of .456" diameter.

even with the marlins action strength, thats sounds like a lot of cartridge pressure to contain. Doesn't sound like a good idea to me at all. Thats why one of the first things you learn in the safety course is not to fire any ammo in a rifle that doesn't have the actual ammo the gun uses engraved on the barrel/reciever.
Looks like a facelift waiting to happen. I certainly wouldn't use it, and I think that he has been extremely lucky thus far. But, natural selection has a way of making society smarter by taking out the dumb ones.

I'm pretty sure that the .44 mag operates at slightly lower pressure than the .444 marlin according to SAAMI and CIP cartridge specifications. Actually i'm dam sure 'cause i looked it up.

As for natural selection and "taking out the dumb ones"... it appears that society won't be getting smarter any time soon.

I wouldn't be worried about the lower operating pressures of the .44 mag, as it has about an inch of freebore to contend with. Even at 15,000 PSI, I personally would be worried about that much unsupported area.
And ditto on society staying at par. Thats how we maintain status quo on population.

What unsupported area?
Only way to get killed with that combination is to stand in front of the barrel.

As I understood it the 444 was a second stage drawing of the 30/06 brass w/o the rim turned. brass life w/ .02 expansion wouldn't be long. Just buy an marlin 94, or get a chamber cast made the shoot 444
