I see that it is made out of aluminum, what are the arms18 and SA mounts made of? Is aluminum a desirable material for this part? Who's willing to try it out? lol

Thanks!

ARMS# & Smith mounts are made of steel.

S.A. mounts are aluminum.

IMHO & experience, buy steel mounts.

SKBY.

The price is appealing and they may be of very good quality .
but...
They are made of aluminum , and lots of people complain of aluminum mounts .
Its roughly 2/3rds the price of the prefered mount . Any savings will long be forgotten when you have to buck up for the steel mount .
I would still like to hear a first hand experience of one - and there new op rod guide as well .

The op rod guide is money in the bank. Buy one. As for the scope mount, I'll find out soon enough.

They look like a well built piece. Certainly wouldn't have any issues with restricting ejection as some other mounts do. Also, the higher mount, allows for lower rings which have a savings in both weight and bulk.

As long as the wear points have been 'hardened', it should last a lifetime of abuse.

I have never understood why there is such an adversion to high strength Alum alloy in tactical rifles. There are many many alloys of varying properties and some much stronger/resiliant then common versions of steel. There is a weight savings using alum too.

The aircraft and racing car industry has come up with amazing alloys and basically don't use much steel. Nope, NASCAR is about as modern as a model T in the racing world. There is a lot of alloys used there too - if they get away with it.

Then there is the question of scope tubes. Are they any scopes manf today that don't use an aircraft type alum alloy to make the scope tube?

Seems to be strong enough...Let's not condem something until it has earned that claim.

mount

My position on this is that if i purchase it and end up not liking it and send it back to marstar then I am still out the 30'ish for the S&H..... and i know there is a guarantee but maybe not a "Cash Back - I dont like it" guarantee.

when there are a few out there and the feedback is good people will try them, only thing is that by then everyone will have purchased another product...... lets face it there are a few components to this item....

1-functionability/reliability
2-price
3-LCF (quality of manufacturing)

-to establish the functionability/reliability of this item it will take time and feedback from multiple users.....
-to establish LCF more pictures are needed of the mount alone and mounted....
-and we all can find out the price....

Just my thoughts on this - by no means am i condeming this item, I am honestly looking at it as a viable option, I just want to hear feedback and see more pics of it.

Just got my Marstar scope mount. Much beefier than the Leapers one, that's for sure. Seems well designed. Won't know for sure until I get the stripper clip guide off of my M305. It's being a stubborn SOB compared to my other M305.

My only criticism of the mount so far is that whoever is making these things really needs to finish the steel parts of the mount a little better, though that shouldn't affect the function of the mount.

EDIT: Whew. Finally got the clip guide off using the time-honoured "Bigger Hammer" method.

Finally got the mount on the rifle. It is quite solid. There is more clearance above the bolt than with the Leapers mount and as a consequence the mount sits a little higher so if you're going to get one of these mounts you'll probably want to look into getting a cheek rest because right now on my M305 instead of cheek weld it's more like chin weld or jaw weld.

Can't wait to take it to the range.

Okay, range update. I couldn't really get a good asessment of the scope mount. The screws kept coming loose so I'll have to get some blue Loctite on them and take it back to the range again. Couldn't shoot for groups worth a darn. Part of the problem may have been the cheapo Marstar scope I was using on it too, so maybe I'll try a different scope and see how things turn out. I haven't been able to shoot very well with that scope on other rifles either.

One design problem I have found with this scope mount is that the piece that replaces the stripper clip guide makes it difficult to remove and replace the bolt while cleaning the rifle. It's too big and gets in the way. I ended up getting so frustrated that I hammered out the pin and removed the block so I could put the bolt back in again without a fight.

On the bright side the brass clears the mount well when it's ejecting. There were only a couple of case ding marks cases on the bottom of the mount.

So overall I would say that if you're thinking of buying this scope mount you may want to wait until the next revision of it to see if they redesign the stripper clip guide piece.

And before anyone tells me that I should have read the instructions, there were no instructions.

Hello HPL, I was tempted to install one of Marstar scope on mine too, would I be better of with a Bushnell Trophy 6X-18x (50mm) or Bushnell Legend 5-15x (40mm) or any other brand ?

Thanks

I really don't know. I'm not exactly Carlos Hathcock in the accuracy department, so chances are it could have been me more than anything. I'm going to try Loctiting the screws and taking it to the range again.

get a scope that will take the abuse.

M14's tend to rattle scopes fairly hard. :) so someting with a gaurentee.

I just removed my leepers mount, I've had enough of that crappy thing. :(

I have ordered one and would love to give a range report, except someone at Marstar put an incorrect postal code on the box, so there's no telling when (or if) it gets here.
