Hey, I know I posted previously about my SKS having something that looked a bit like surface rust on it but I was just curious if anyone else has bought an SKS from Marstar and noticed this?

The guns were manufactured in the 60's and have been in cosmoline ever since so i'm not sure if this is a normal thing to see with unused yet old milsurp rifles such as this.

The inner parts seem to have this reddish sorta rusty tint that seems to wipe off on paper towel when you apply a bit of oil but appears to still stay on the metal.

The bore however is as shiny as can be.

WTF!!! Leave Marstar alone do we really need another thread beating up on them.It is rust put some oil on it!!

"...not sure if..." Hi. It's normal for 'foreign' cosmoline to look odd. Cosmoline is actually a generic trade name for thick petroleum jelly. Comes off by taking the stock off and dropping the whole thing into a vat/container of Varsol(aka mineral spirits) for 24 hours then wipe it off. Clean the barrel as per normal too.
Brake cleaner will do too, but Varsol is cheaper.
"...Leave Marstar alone..." They do need to hire somebody to keep their web site up-to-date.

Sometimes it happens with Cosmo . You can clean it of no problem. just take it a part and give it a good clean. Check out Youtube some good source for SKS cleaning tricks. Everyone has favorite ways to clean it.
Marstar Rock :)

Cheers

Wasn't beating on Marstar, just wanted to be as specific as possible with the type of SKS I had. Marstar is great, albeit their website could do some work hah.

Also, I had removed the cosmo off it before firing, I guess its just some deeper down stuff. Ill try soaking part of it in varsol for 24 hours like previously mentioned to see if that removes it.

Main purpose of this tread was just pure curiosity, its my first milsurp. Other than that the gun fires flawlessy, the reddish tint is only really noticeable when I go to clean it so I figure if the mineral spirits don't work Ill just leave it and monitor it in the future.

Ill post some pics up in a bit, it'll make things a bit easier.

This part of the gun probably got the least attention to cosmo removal and happens to be the part that is the most glaring and obvious.

I'm pretty sure its just some stubborn cosmo, break cleaner does help a bit but this stuff is much harder to get off. Whats the harm in leaving it like this? I'm not really looking forward to pulling it out of the stock all over again and spraying it down.

Also since we're already on the topic The end of the barrel seems to have a tid bit of the chrome chipped, any suggestions? or just extra care to oil up after use.

If you can see the little tick in the "outer" portion of the circle, that's what im talking about, the stuff you see that's in the "inner" portion turned out to be just some gunk from firing, its cleaned right off.

I know I've asked a lot of questions and I just wanted to say thanks, you guys have been great, I hope I can return the favor in the future when I have more experience.

No worries about rust on an sks. they were built to last and meant to blast. Have fun with it and I'd be more concerned keeping the more serious hunting rifles in good shape.:D

That doesn't look like rust to me, just discoloration or staining. Use and continued cleanings will get rid of it, I bet.

Sorry to burst your buble.
But that ain't rust. It's just poor blueing. Get a re-bluing kit from your local store and re-do it or just do like everyone else says and who cares and shoot it. SkS's are a dime a dozen and there all surplus so everyone rifle will not be prestine. Although if you are that dis-satisfied Marstar does have a 100% customer garuntiee. Call up Frank and he will square it up with you. Or continue cring and complaining that the world ain't perfectly as you wish. The choice is your's.

As long as it isn't rust I can care less, I wasn't expecting a perfectly clean look I've just had minimal experience with this. Id like to learn the most I can about my firearms is all. Thanks for the clarification.

Satain man , take a pill. The guy just wondered what was on his sks and he thought it was rust,so he came on this site and politely asked a question.Yes he mentioned Marstars name but did not say anything derogatory about the place. If the more experienced fellas like yourself keep jumpin down the throats of newbies ,then this site will start getting a bad rep. He just wanted info. Relax!

When your up to your ass in aligators ,it's hard to remember ,the initial objective was to drain the swamp!!

My bad bobdbldr.
Igormon I am sorry if I offended you.
Just I don't know why so many people griping on Marstar lately. As all they do is give use great value goodies for below reasonable pricing that makes all other companies lower there pricing on similar products. Although every time they do something like this I read griping. Or they run into shipping issues cause some thing great that they have plained for us dosn't arrive on time and so on & so on.
I too have had an issue with one of there products that they sold me but instead of posting it on-line I called them up and asked them about it. Just like that they squared me up and not only resolved the problem but left a smile on my face for the rest of the day on how they handel it.

Now if your worried about you crown Igormon take a dremil and some filtz on a polishing pad and buff out the marks. Should take all of 10 seconds to do and it will bling to you.

It could also be that there is a little extra nickel in the steel. SVT 40s ended up with a plum or gold colored bolt when they tried to re-blue them during refurbs due to elevated nickel content in the steel.

But I'm still guessing its a stian that will go away over time. Shoot that sucka and find out! And please update and let us know.

For the ones who have trouble recognizing attempted humor I sincerely apologize,I love Marstar threads, the ones that are love feasts and the ones that are ##### feasts!!We need more of each!!!

I shot the SKS about two weeks ago and it was fantastic. Main concern which is now resolved thanks to everyone's input was the apparent "rust" issue.

The guns are going into storage at least until Christmas break then back in until the summer as I am starting school and other obligations again. Wanted to be 100% what it was before they were stored.

Having said that the updates wont come anytime soon i'm sorry hahah.

Satain, no offense taken, I understand where you're coming from. I should have been a bit more careful with what I named the thread as I can see now it can be misinterpreted fairly easily.

Thanks for the info on the crown, I think ill leave it for now but will definitely look into buying that tool as it looks quite useful for some other projects.

Now, just to reiterate with everyone here. Marstar has been great, with my initial worries now gone and solved this SKS is everything I could have hoped for.

I will definitely shop from them in the future when budget permits of course.

Satain, Why would you tell someone to recrown a barrel unless it actually needed it? If not properly done you might pooch the accuracy and then the OP would be pooched also.I know we are talking about a SKS here but really. If I had a small blemish at the muzzle of my Mosin sniper and you told me to Flitz it with a Dremel to make it look better, that is a nutz slap comment!
