betasite, I was being realistically sarcastic. There is no way that many M1 Garands or M1 Carbines could be absorbed into the Canadian market. Look at what's happened to SKS rifles. The same can be said for the 91/30 rifles.
This is just about it boys and girls. Not a lot of time left to get these goodies. The UN, is mandating that the seller nations, destroy these curios and relics. Sadly, for the most part they are complying with the pressure.
We have just gone through another golden era. Not quite like the gold rush of the 60s and 70s but pretty close. This one is grinding to an end now. If we're extremely lucky, Russia and her former satellite nations under Soviet rule, will open the doors of the warehouses of captured WWII artifacts. Even then, I wonder what is really left?
I was looking through some pics on the web recently. It's amazing how many pics are still around. I got into a site that was all printed in Cyrillic. It showed many pics of Axis prisoners, cleaning up an old battle field. There was equipment strewn everywhere. At first, I thought the bundles on the ground were rags. They were bodies. After a year or so in the open, they had pretty much wasted away.
The Soviets, had bulldozed huge pits and the prisoners were just throwing everything into the pits. Bodies, weapons, assorted junk, dessicated animals and wagons. They didn't separate anything. I saw panzerfausts, grenades, small arms, everything a man could carry. They did separate the field kitchen utensils from all of the mess but other than heavy equipment, like trucks, field pieces and armor, it all went into the pits. It didn't look like they discriminated between armies either. If it was there, it went into the pits. I wonder how much if any battle field gear was really salvaged? I suspect, most of it just went into the ground. Maybe, when the armies surrendered, their weapons were thrown into piles and salvaged. Even then, the condition of most was probably pretty awful. Small arms, take a real beating on the battlefield. Maybe some of the ex armorers on the site could tell us what the attrition rates really are.
