MARTINI HENRY / british RED TUNIC QUESTION

Don:

I don't know why I have "missed the obvious" so far, but the place you are likely to get the most assistance on this quest is the Victorian Wars Forums! In atonement, I have already started a thread on your behalf in the appropriate forum there - http://www.victorianwars.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=7972

Check in there to correct any misdirection my post may be guilty of, and then keep an eye on the thread .....

i know the site ..............ive tried to join but for some weird reason cannot .............some glitcch in my or there system............i did see the post but so far cannot reply to it. and i do thank you. i see 1 gent offer help and ill hopefully message him soon as i get on that group.

Don:

Did you see this pattern (from a military modelling magazine, apparently) now posted there by "tabony"? (I'm old enough and fussy enough that the size posted seemed too small to me, so I've enlarged and enhanced it a bit ....) Note that it is a very simply-cut garment - i.e. nowhere near as "tailored" as a tunic would be. This pattern is very basic but hopefully, knowing your own measurements and in conjunction with any other patterns you have (like the sack coat) you could work from this -

Have to start making supper now, but I can PM Albert J's e-mail address later .....

Grant, soldiers were small back then. Most came from the big ciities like London and it was either the military or starve. Their parents were often malnourished and that passed on to the children I have a pair of Victorian military trousers and the label says for people 5'1'' to 5' 2" Among my collection of officer's uniforms of the same period, the sizes are also small. These uniforms were not items that were never issued, but rather ones that were actualy worn. Granted some officers were large, but they came from the upper classes where nutrition was far better.

John: My reference to "size" was simply regarding the smallness of the pattern image posted on the Victorian Wars Forums ...... I have enlarged the above version to make it easier for tired old eyes like mine to see the pattern ..... ;)

At 6' 4" - and weighing a great deal too much for my own good - I am painfully aware of the utter impossibility of finding original garments which would come even remotely close to fitting most "normal sized" persons of today ..... let alone me!

When I first joined the 1885 Field Artillery Detachment I now belong to, prior to getting an Artillery uniform I appeared with them in an "infantry support" role, uniformed as a Sergeant of the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. When talking to the audiences, our Detachment Sergeant was forever referring to me as "the Jolly Green Giant over there ...."

the project is progressing ...............have ordered 5 large and 2 smaller brass service buttons ................ordered the white braid for making the cuff trim , order of 1 glengarry cap and regt. badge, and 2 collar dogs/ badges cutting out pattern / fabric for the tunic and liner on my days off next week.

my neighbor is a seemstress/ tayor and ill get a little help when required for the trim and such.

NICE PHOTO OF THE GUN CREWW AND INFANTRY SUPPORT.

update

now have the needed bits
1 glengarry hat and badge.
white trim braid
white piping - trim.
red wool fabric ( close but not melton ...............)
brass buttons, collar badges / shoulder regt. numbers.

navy blue trousers with red blood stripe ( modern military/ rmc college trousers and again, close enough )

the pattern cutting and sewing will begin...............my biggest problem i see coming will be sewing the cuff trim / fancy knot on each arm cuff.
stay tuned!!

Do keep us posted!

As you likely already know (assuming that is you in your avatar photo) ..... this type of thing gets to be a bit of an obsession ....

Another source could be the Brecon Museum in Wales.
Curator is Bill Cainan. In 2012 they created a Anglo-Zulu War room display .
Perhaps he would send images of the uniform they display.
Check Www.azwrs.com and www.rrw.org.uk for links to the museum .
I believe they can connect you to a reenactment group portraying the 24th regiment during the zulu war.
Those guys may help too.

Further to that, and "dressing the part", are you aware of this new 3-gun action shooting sport which started in the US just a few years ago - "Zoot Shooters" - literally has a "gangster era" theme .... and looks like a heap of fun -
