Martini Henry

Just read Steve Jones post, yes it is awicked recoil with real ammo. Ihave reloade with 45/70 hand cast lead and 90 grain of pyrodex and same of ffg,and it is fairly tame. I found some original kynoch ammo at a gun show 20.00 per cartrige. could not resist sending one downrange. one less original in the world, oh well. I would say that if you were to fire 20 of these in a day you would be in real pain. I think that the recoil would be comparable to a 300 winmag

My martini should have arrived yesterday so I figure tomorrow at the latest...??

I am so excited, its crazy... I havent felt like this since Christmas 1985..

I just want to strip her down , I hope all her steel is in good shape, If the union monkeys at Can post smash up the wood, Ill just have to replace it with custom walnut p+++.

Anyone know where I can get some 577/450 brass? I found some at a shop in Ontario a couple years ago. Now I;ll be dammed if I can remember who it was. Can anyone help?

HNDFS sold some in lots of 20 at £1 per case, that was discounted, 40 cases and a set of dies was about £150 I seem to remember and thats at least with a shell holder but no bullet mold.
Damn expensive, some shooting collectors here wait for others to retire before starting to reload those!

Greener GPs are Martini Actions and have safety catches/decockers.Although designed as shotguns they are large ring receivers and can take most barrels.

What thread do they use? Is it the same as the reg martini/enfield?

Swiss powder....I get in the USA. Perfectly legal on both sides of the border as long as you don't exceed 8 Kg's at a crossing and it must be in 1 lb. containers. Last I got was $18.95-$21.95 per pound. Good luck getting it in Canada, especially at those prices.

If you strip it down be careful how you do it. There are internet sites that show how to do it. What looks like a screw holding in the breach block is actually a split pin. You can do damage to your new gun if you don't understand how it goes together. Just a caution. Enjoy the thing and yes you will get more of them.

Well here she is Boys!!!
I just now have finished, she was fully stripped to the bones, every part cleaned and inspected and greased ,
her outers were given a light and semi antiquated cold blue "I may re do it but Its nice lookin so far", the forstock was tightened with oiled leather between it and the barel, I replaced the rear sling swivel with a better one "from loyalist" then the plain crappy home made jobby it came with

the stock scrubbed of 120 years of gunk-
splits repaired then stained lightly with special walnut, and as of 1/2 hour ago had its first of many hand rubbed lynseed oil sessions.

Now she awaits some field testing!!

450/577 adapters?

wer can we get an adapter or ind out info on making 1 or 2?
cost? got a mk2 m.h. rifle coming........
any info welcomed /thanks

The chamber adaptors are exactly as you described. Theyare turned steel and the magnum brass "swages" into them. The only problems I have had is that because the necks have been anealed they are soft. If you drop one then you have a deformed case mouth that no amount of harsh language can straighten out.
I am going to get some proper cases and try them out. Finding "FG" might be a problem so I will be using "FFG".
Does your ammo give good accuracy? I have been using 70g Pyrodex RS with a heavy carboard wad and using "bore butter" for lube. Its ok but it could be better.
Where are you getting Swiss powder?

Sorry, but the adapters I have were custom made by a gunsmith. I can post pics on this thread if any one is interested in looking at them. It is a bit involved when it comes to initially setting them up but I think it is worth the effort.
The simplest(???!!!) way to get into it is to buy some 450/577 brass from Kerry Jenkins (sorry no phone#). I believe he is in Golden, BC. He is very helpfull. The next thing is a press and dies. LEE now makes dies and a heavy duty press.

There are commonly available chamber adaptors for .303 to 7.62 x 39, .223 to .22lr so if enough people ask it can happen, I saw a loon using an adaptor in a MH attempting the Mad Minute at an HBSA shoot at Bisley, barmy!

Gun looks good Musketfire

Thanks!

Im still gathering info, and looking for a proper bullett mould to start casting, but its all coming together.

I was thinking of maybe starting a historical Canadian regiment based on the period of this arm,
Yearly dues to cover uniforms and a powder magasine, and other expenses, quarterly shoots??? I dont know the Idea is all still formulating.

May be one of the local armories would enjoy having us volenteer to be present at parades and what not?
At the least perhaps we could maybe use the facilities to practice drill??

Could be a good basis for a shooting/ social club

I already belong to a 1725-1812 period club we drill at one of the local armories and its alot of good fun.

Cheers

Bruno gross of bullseye reloading sells 45-70 adapters for the 577-450 I have one these takes a bit of fitting they do work but are a pain in the **S they are fine if you just want to make it go bang afew times and already reload for 45-70 but to shoot it much bite the bullet and order dies brass and a custom mold Mine likes FG and a 500gr .462 dia. bullet with large lube groves and lard &wax lube be prepared to play with loads and different bullets till you find the combo that works the best for you

Martini dies

I know Lee precision makes dies for577/450. You have to use thier heavy duty press but the price seems right. I think if Lee is getting into dies you are going to see the brass getting easier to get.
