I purchased an intl mk4 and I'm toying with the idea of putting a nice modern scope on it but I'd need to d&t it to mount a base or rail to it because it is the model that dosent have the unertl bases on the barrel.
Does anyone have experience with a setup like that, how tough/expensive of a job would that be?

They scream out for a Unertl !" target or 1 1/2" target model, mine wears a !" Target 10X, you'll need to drill and tap the barrel with 4 holes anyways. Std. Unertl bases and Posa/Redfield are available new from CPA Rifles. A modern scope would look really dumb and out of place here. Spacing on Unertl's is usually 7", except for the Vulture, which is less but was meant to be mounted on receivers of bolt guns. Expect to pay quite a bit more for a Unertl then you did the gun.

I have a Martini in 22 kHornet that currently wears a 3200 10X. I love the rifle and I love the scope but it is a combination that just doesn't work.

Can't find a rail profiled to fit the barrel and where it sits now makes it tough to get the rounds in. Also it can't be moved far enough back to be in the right spot.

Would love to find something like Ben mentioned. On a .22 though I think that you can get all that a gun like that has to offer with a really good set of target peeps. For target shooting anyway - hunting might be a different matter.

I had a nice .22 Martini many years ago that I had drilled and tapped and equipped with a section of rail. I tried many combinations of "modern" scopes and assorted rings, and they were all ridiculous. Very difficult to access the loading area, equally difficult to achieve proper eye relief, and generally stupid looking. The functional problems might be solved with the use of a forward mounting position and a scout scope...but the "stupid looking" part of the equation will remain.

Joe Dlask does a Picatiny rail. It is 12 inches long, and makes for a neat looking package . . . plus it works on my friend's gun . . . he is an older gentleman and you better bring your "A" Game to our .22 BR Matches.

Putting ANY kind of scope except for a return to battery job like the old Feckers, Unertls, Lymans, etc, should be classed as a criminal offence!!:p
I had at one time 8 Unertls, but have sold them and use only a Lyman 15X Super targetspot now, and use it on my martinis and my M37 Remington as well.
They can be bought , but are getting a tad scarcer , for sure!
