Mas 36

Hello all;

I'm thinking about buying a MAS 36 as a restoration project. It needs new wood and I just happen to know where I can get a replacement stock set. The problem is the barrel lenght. It seams to be a little short. I think the MAS 36 were made with about a 22" (or so) barrel and this one is quite a bit shorter than that. Where any of the MAS 36 made with shorter barrels, or does anyone know where a decent MAS 36 barrel could be found?

Was that the one in the EE? It's barrel has been chopped. You can buy a decent MAS 36 for upwards of $200, so the resto isn't financially feasible, even though the wood from Numrich is only about $50 for a full set.

Now, you could get a .308 barrel for it, and then it might be worthwhile, no searching for unobtanium ammo. I have one in 7.5 French, and it's a sweetie to shoot. Nice sights, low recoil, smooth bolt. They would be a lot more popular if the ammo wasn't such a beast to find, IMHO.

I got one like yours in a trade. It is chambered in .308 Winchester. Barrel is shortened, probably set back as a result of rechambering.
Even with its elongated front blade, it shoots high. It groups nicely however.
Problem is the 308 Win cartridge is shorter than the original round so the second round's tip always get squashed just a bit left of the chamber mouth. I would have to alter the follower's profile to solve the problem.
Could make a very capable truck gun though.

I saw that one, I would fix it up and use it as is. Not worth the trouble to restore it when it has them extra markings stamped on it. They are great rifles, though. Strong, simple, and well made. The only complaint I had with mine was the short buttstock. The only other military rifle with a butt that short is the M1903 Springfield. I guess US and French soldiers were shorter than the soldiers of other countries.
