I'm also pretty sure he did not give anything in writing to my friend (he was the only one charged). Well, went to court today. Funny legal system the "distinct society" has. If my buddy wanted the CO's involved to be available to testify, it would cost him $50. We both testified, but the judge didn't render a verdict today. He did ask if either side had asked for adjournments to explain the long delay. Neither side did, but I don't know if it will have any impact on his decision. There was another case there where the guy had shot a deer and had trouble finding it, so he went back to get his vehicle, and left his gear and gun there. He parked his truck, and went to look for the deer with a spotlight. He found the deer not far away (150 ft. away), and when he turned around to go back to get his knife in the car, the Co was there and charged him with failure to tag. The deer had not been moved or gutted, and all of the guy's hunting gear was in his vehicle, corroborated by the CO. That happened in 2009.
Oh, when the judge asked me if I was a hunter, I said yes, in Ontario, but that I had absolutely no interest in hunting in QC. He asked why. I said it would be foolish to pay some $300 to buy a license to hunt deer in Quebec, when I live in Eastern Ontario where we trip on deer. He smiled. I also told him that after this, I have no interest whatsoever in any sporting activity in QC. He again smiled.

I had some very bad experience's several years back while driving through Quebec on my way to Labrador. The fine folks of Labrador describe the drive through Quebec as running the "gauntlet". According to the majority of the populous of Labrador, who have extensive first hand experience on the subject, state that all Quebec law enforcement officals no matter what type openly harass any and all individuals from out of province. Me driving up there with Ontario plates on my vehicle made me prime pickings, as apparently folks from Ontario are the most despised.
I grew up in northeastern Ontario near the Quebec border and lived daily with self serving arrogance of these people. There is rarely a traveller who has visited Quebec that doesn't have some sort of a bad experience story.
So there's not much the little guy from Wyevale Ontario can do except, never will I spend another cent in that province, if I can possibly avoid it I never buy any goods manufactured there. If it comes down to purchasing goods from Quebec vs China. China gets my money hands down. If the earth opened up tomorrow and swallowed the whole of Quebec, not a tear I would shed. Canada as a whole would be alot better off and much more financially stable without Quebec leaching from the Canadian tax payers purse. We will then build a nice big bridge over the whole in the ground so the folks in the eastern provinces can come and go to the rest of Canada without issue.

Not sure. I asked him that, but he didn't have a lawyer and is not highly educated. I only heard about the court date a few weeks ago, otherwise I would have offered to do it for him, but it was too late. The judge did question why it took so long to get to court, and I'm hoping he will overturn the ticket. I know that if I were a sitting judge and any case came in front of me with such shoddy work, the Crown would be getting a new rectum reamed. They didn't even write my name correctly on the documents, although they got them from my driver's license. they wrote in the wrong township as to where the event occurred. At one point, there is a written query from Quebec City MNR office asking for the accused's explanation of events, but there is no answer from the CO's. The judge did seem fairly responsible and level-headed, so I hope it will all work out.

The officer was correct and within his legal duties in issuing the ticket, for that I have no complaints. The problem arose when I arrived home and took a close look at the ticket to discover the absolute only english words on the ticket was my name and address.
So I sought advice from my lawyer. You can not just ignore the ticket as Ontario and Quebec has an agreement of receprocity. Which basically means whatever illegal acts Ontario citizens do in Quebec also count in Ontario and vice versa. So if I didn't pay the ticket the next time I went to renew my Ontario drivers licience I would be paying then as it would be on my Ontario driving record.
Next issue with paying the fine is where do you send the check? Since the ticket is "all" in french and I can not read it. The lawyer tells me legally according to the charter all such documents must be written in both official languages, but Quebec thinking there special does not follow the rules. So the ticket can be fought and won in court on that basis, but the catch is I must appear in court where the ticket was issued, or pay someone to appear in my absence. So that means traveling back up to Freemont Quebec for a court appearance. The fine was approx $52. dollars. Except to make a point, it simply was not worth the expense's involved. That is the same way my relatives from Labrador describe the place. Most prefer to fly out or take the fairy to Newfoundland. No need to give your dollars to gas stations and hotels that don’t want it and then give the remainder to the police.

you're absolutely right about Quebecois being good people in general. I was born in QC. So was my wife, and an awful lot of my family still lives there. The problem is with the State of Quebecistan. I don't know how the people allow such a banana socialist republic to exist. I mean how in the world do you justify having to pay to have the arresting officer come to testify to prove that you are, in fact, guilty. And please, please, please, don't tell me that it is the same situation in the rest of Canada!!!!!

Legal adice cost me zip as my lawyer is not one of the ones that charges you for walking through his door. The area that I live and worked is predominantly French speaking so getting the ticket read was not an issue as all of my freinds here are either French and or Metis.
I would agree that the majority of the population of Quebec are comprised for the most part ordinary folks just trying go about there daily lives. Unfortunately the governing bodies in Quebec treat there citizens similar to mushrooms. Lots of manure and in the dark. The brain washing is extensive, and don't ever try to deny it. At present everybody in the remainder of Canada is completely and totally fed up with Quebec. My previous comments are harsh, but Quebec is an open leaching sore that no amount of attention or care by the rest of Canada has proven successfull in healing.
Seriously if I had the power I would split Quebec between the Aboriginals and the Americans, keeping only the lands south of the St.Lawrence to tie Canada to the eastern provinces.
In retrospect several years ago I was persuaded, arm twisted, captured and put in the truck and driven to Mt. St. Anne and LeMassif. We were teaching British school children at St.Anne and went on to Lemassif just to ski. We were on staff at St.Anne so fellow instructors treated us well and bridged the language barrier. Lemassiff I was sure would be nothing but a nightmare, but surprisingly enough the folks treated us well, genuinely very freindly. In the Bay Saint Paul area anyways there does appear to be a accepting attitude by the locals towards english speaking tourists. It was the very first time in my numerous trips to Quebec that I did not come home with a negative story.
Is there an attitude change slowly sweeping over the land of Quebec. Not according to the evening news, or the majority of returning travellers Or the originator of this thread. A sad state of affairs indeed. But like a teenage child who constantly rebels and will not listen to any sort of reason. No other option is viable except to throw the child out on the street and let it fend for itself. Canada, as a parent has reached that point with Quebec.

As a Montreal born anglo who left the province in 1973, spent three years in Ontario then ended up in BC in 76 I will state this. Driving in Ontario with Quebec plates garners the same attention as the other way round. Reading some of these posts frustrates me. I see the usual Quebec/Ontario BS is alive and well. Quebec is a valuable part of this country in more ways than I care to mention here. Legal systems are a joke throughout this country, the BC provincial system is officially broken. Cases are thrown out regularly because they are past their due date. Alberta, the oil rich province, is in the hole financially big time. Given the their royalty income how can this be? What would the comments be if this same situation prevailed in Quebec? I can imagine. The OP ran into a couple of bullet heads. That was unfair. There was some excellent legal advice already handed out on this thread. At this point my next move would be to attack them with whatever legal means you can cheaply muster. Load them with paper. Be a pain in the a$$. That is the only way to get past this kind of impasse.
BC story: Two buddies pulled over on Highway 16 about 20 years ago. DFO searched their coolers and tried to bust them for illegal sockeye. They were Coho and legal. Sanity prevailed when a more experienced CO at the road block trumped the bullet head. Too bad the stupid factor was times two in this case.

I apologise to both OP and mrgoat, to the OP for hijacking and to mrgoat for being sarcastic with my comments. It just gets frustrating when people insult my province which is a part of my country. When someone craps on Quebec they also insult my wife and kids. I am a Canadian and proud of it.

The answer was since the deer was on private property and the owner wasn't there to give consent to remove the dead deer they wanted to make nobody would use it as food.
