Mastercraft 6" Digital Caliper now $15, was $40

yep, i woulld've guessed 4 times a year though

the jobmate dremel however goes on sale everyweek! 9,99$

Just double check your measurements. When you open and close them 5 or 6 times....then go to full closed and it's still reading 0.010"....well...you get what you pay for I guess. I bought one and still use it but I'm spoiled. I bought an 8" Mitotyo (the Caddlilac of measuring tools) about 20 years ago for $200.00 and it's served me very well.

LOL! I didn't know it goes on sale that many times a year. I guess it's not note worthy to report.

I cycled it a dozen times from close to full open. Still measuring 0.000". I guess it's okay right now. I don't have any known length to measure accuracy against. Is checking caliper accuracy like this acceptable?

Ok. This is going way above and beyond what we do with them, but the proper way to check them is with a set of gauge blocks. These are a very precisely ground set of metal blocks made to an exact measurment. This is usually a tool reserved for machine shops and such because they aren't cheap. I seem to come across someone with a set every few years and I check my Mitotoyo against them. Every single time, the thing is bang on.

Since you won't likely have access to a set, the next best thing is to measure something with a known calibrated device be it a vernier or a micrometer, then measure the same thing with whatever you want to test.

Since you won't likely have access to a known calibrated measuring device, the least you can do with a vernier is to close it, zero it, then open and closed it 20 or so times. Close it again and see if it goes back to zero. If it does, great. If it doesn't, then there's a problem somewhere....likely a slippage on the bar.

Hope that helps.

That helps. Thanks!

If it zeros in right now, I can't complain. Long term use, I don't know since it's a $15 Chinacraft.

Nothing to compare, but feels like a sturdy instrument. Gotta say, best ruler I ever bought. Everything else I have until now were rulers and measuring tapes. LOL!

Unable to measure thickness of paper until now. Yuppie!

Ok, silly question of the night....whats the difference between a micrometer and calipers? As far as what you use them for?

Or are they pretty much just two tools to do the same job? (ie: a Ruler and a tape measure)

They are very close but here is a good example I found online of the slight differences..

"digital calipers are fine for measuring an item whose thickness is consistent right up to the edge, for surfaces with a lip, rim, or bevel on the edge you should use a micrometer. Make sure your QC team is using the right tools and that they are calibrated properly to avoid any mistakes."

Those CT digital calipers burn thru batteries like crazy. You can get batteries for them cheap at many dollar stores but its a nuisance. I bought a Mitutoya and gave my Mastercraft away.
