There are 4 options:
In original configuration->
-Collector
-Shooter: You're typical mis-matched / refurbed rifle / restored sporter
-Wall-hangar/deactivated
Non-original->
Sporter: someone modified it to be better/custom/el-cheapo sniper/needs more lasers/needs more holes drilled/cut down wood... etc.
[original matching parts] x [maker (byf, duv, bnz, etc] x [year (pre/mid/late/post war) + (correct parts/proof marks for that year/maker)] x [contract (german / yugoslavian / portuguese)] x [refurb (yes/no)] x [CONDITION] + [accessories (i.e. slings, bayonets, etc)] = PRICE and there's what people want for their property... so good luck.

I paid $2000 for mine. It matches right down to the firing pin. She is a safe queen and if I want to shoot a k98, I grab one of my RC's. It is difficult to find them all matching here in Canada, so it can reflect on the price. Are you looking or selling?
They are rare, the easiest one to find with all German markings except for the crest on the receiver, the Portuguese 1941s.
A mint Mauser like the 1941 is an easy $2000 + or - . To find a Model 33/40 another $1000 to $1500 or more.

A true matching original in decent condition is going to be around 2k and that's for a common code/configuration.
As mentioned though, prices vary considerably depending on many factors. Also, you have to be very careful that you aren't buying a refurb or faked piece. I've seen a lot of K98k's advertised up here as "all matching" when in fact they are ground and renumbered/force matched refurbs. Some are out right fakes.
Do you research and always ask for a second opinion. I've said this many times on here but will mention it again that either myself or CanadianAR are willing to help.

The deals are still out there, you just have to know where to look. I have recently paid in the $200.00, and up to $500.00 range for all matching K98 complete with rod and sling. But then, I've also paid more so it all works out.
You may or may not find deals on the internet as Vultures and Price Cheerleaders giving advice always seem to lurk. LOL. Your mileage will vary.
Asking the price right out on a forum is like putting a sign on your back saying "Will Pay Top Dollar and take my Wallet too" as always seems to be the case. Just remember, anything under $1,000,000 is a deal on the EE!

If you own a completely matching K98k original finish with unsanded stocks my advice would be DON'T SHOOT IT. If you want a shooter buy a Yugo refurb or Russian capture. Then if you break something you are not out a lot of money. Matching(not refurbed/force matched) rifles will go from $1500 and up depending on condition and code. Lurk on the Gunboards k98 forum or the K98 forum and you will learn a lot simply from rereading old posts. There are a lot of guys on these forums who are really sharp on K98k's. Note that prices in the U.S. will be LOWER than here owing to a bigger supply of original rifles there.
Matching says nothing about the condition. The condition means everything.
The Portuguese 1941's we had in the shop, long ago, were absolutely mint except for the sling. Came with a matching mint bayonet and filled with Cosmoline with the laminated stock. Sold for $215 in the early 80's.

I would agree with JBs assessment. $2000-2500 in canada. Buying them slightly cheaper in the USA is offset by importation cost.
Coyotes rifles of $200 and $500 are mostly long gone. It's very rare these days.
The port rifles are definitely the easy ones to find here. But in matching mint condition with bayo and sling, still sell for $2500+. I've seen several go for $3k.
And if a matching k98k shows up on the EE, and it has no issues, it's not common, hence the high price. And to be brutally honest, if I sell any of mine, Id ask a lot too, they take work to find and suffering to wait for, which isn't included in the origimal price.

Average price in the US for a decent condition 98k with nothing special about it runs from about $1500-$1800. With exchange, import fees, shipping etc, you'll end up with another $600 on top of that. The US market dictates our market since it's the only reasonable source for these. Some are available here from time to time, but they're few and far between. Deals for cheaper rifles exist, but are often disappointments once they arrive. If you're in the market do your research and more importantly, ask for help. The guys here offering to help are great and won't steal a rifle out from under you.
I have had some nice Mausers over the years but regret selling some. I would rather not sell to some people who don't appreciate them or the work involved in finding them.

Prices are always very subjective and these things are only worth what people are willing to pay, yada, yada yada... In my opinion, you've asked a direct question so I'll give you a direct answer. The last two I purchased have cost me $2000 for a standard model and $2600 for a kriegsmodell. Both are in very nice matching condition and have never been altered in anyway. Realistically, if the other person knows what they have this is what you should expect to pay (or at least in this ballpark). It isn't impossible to find a Coyote Ugly style deal but it's highly improbable in 2015.
The most difficult aspect of collecting matching K98s in my opinion is actually locating the example you wish to purchase. More often then not, you've got to be in the right place at the right time or at least know the right guy. Most of the people who own rifles like this deal with each other privately so I suggest you start networking (if you haven't already).
