Sharing a video of a friend shooting his reproduction Japanese Matchlock pistol (40 cal). It’s made by Arsa in Spain. It’s incredible the accuracy these smoothbore pistols can produce at 25m.

The loading process is key and I’ve yet to master this element.

Feel free to reach out to me if precision muzzle loading interests you. We are always in need of rifle and handgun shooters (percussion, flintlock and matchlock) and trap shooters.

what do you treat your slow match with, to keep it burning. I tried soaking some hemp rope in saltpeter but it smoulders out fairly quickly

My best success has been with braided strips from an old tee shirt, boiled in a mix of wood ashes and water.
I let the water cool after boiling with the match submerged, then pull and hang to dry. The final step is to knock the residual ash off to reduce the dust, and store in a plastic bag or tin.
Very simple and cheap.

On my matchcord, A 3/8" cotton sash cord. I had experimented with a few oz per liter... dried and did a burn test. then added a few more oz, repeat. It burns steadily, with out too much spitting.

Used Hot water, with stump remover. I remembered I had bought a few lbs of this stuff back in the day... before they had changed the law on purchasing nitrates.
Aparently there are a few fish aquarium suppliers that have this( pure KNO3). its for nitrates in the ecosystems of certain types of aquariums ....
