As the title suggests, I am looking for any information on the Mauser 66 rifles.

Here is a pic of the unopened action:

Very interesting looking rifle and bolt action.

Thanks.

The Mauser 66 is a high quality Rifle. The Price for used ones ( you cannot find a new one ) is still quiet high.
The factory / manufacturer costs to built this Rifle would be today round about 6000 Dollar.
In the early 70 Mauser and the Gunshops sold the last of them. The Price of those were for a new Rifle at that time 3500 DEUTSCH MARK.( 2600 Dollar ). in Germany which was much money for the average german citzicens at that Time a new house costs from 80-200.000 Deutschmark
The Bolt action ( topper receiver ) is like a slide. Mauser built those Rifles in different calibers from .222 Rem to 9,3x62. Mostly in .30 calibers ( , 30-06, 7x64 the midrange for European Hunters )
What kind of info do you need ? Can you read German ? maybe I can help you out in this matter. In Germany you can find sometimes used Mauser 66 in good condition. ( but the Price is still high from 1000-3000 EURO = 1400-4200CAN-Dollar)

Mauser built those Rifles in different calibers from .222 Rem to 9,3x62.

Not that its much different, but another 9.3 that it was chambered in was the 9.3x64. Another bit of info is that the barrels are interchangeable. In short order the barrel can be changed by removing 2 screws on the bottom of the stock. Here is a pic of mine, its chambered in .270 Win. This is an old pic, I put that scope on when I first bought the rifle because I wanted to shoot it. It has since been replaced with a Zeiss.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was looking for general info regarding the rifle as I have come across one at a local gun shop and to be honest have never seen one before and almost bought it there and then... I am going back tomorrow morning to look at it again. It is a .243 chambered rifle. Everything seems to function properly. It has a couple of handling marks, but is otherwise in really good condition. Can I expect this rifle to shoot fairly accurately. I have a custom 98 that can group quite tight, and certainly puts many new rifles to shame. I like my stuff to look good, but I want it to perform as well...

Last reply... I can read German to a point, some of the technical terms start to lose me. After all, I learned the finer points of the German language from the ladies I "met" while travelling there....

Problems Rumored

I read somewhere, a long time ago, that the take down system was faulty. I cannot recall why. I do recall that when the Blaser 93 rifle first hit the market, people said it was a take down design that "actually worked," meaning that it contrasted favourably with other failed take down designs like the 66.

I do not know if any of this criticism was well founded.

Well, the action cycles perfectly, and it is in good condition cosmetically and seems to be very good + functionally and mechanically. I am not able to fire it prior to purchase though...

The big advantage a Mauser 66 has over any other conventional Bolt action Rifle is, because of the telescopic Action they are about 4 inches shorter while having the same Barrel length then a conventional Bolt Action Rifle.

The second advantage is, one can interchange Barrels as long the Shell fits the Boltface. Example if the caliber of your Mauser 66 is 9.3*62, you exchange the Barrel to a .243

The Mauser 66 is way ahead of its time but unfortunately also way to expensive to manufacture. They are exceptional quality Guns, anybody owning one should consider themselves Lucky.

Cheers
