I have found a Mauser 66, but it is a model without the iron sights. ( I was hoping for one with iron sights) It has a rail but I am told it is not a weaver, but european sized? Would this be a problem to get mounts for it?

I have seen some pictures of some Mauser 66's with the same rail on the barrel, but with an adjustable iron sight mounted, and the front site. Can this be done fairly easily by a gunsmith (mounting the foresight)?

Anyone have any insight with this? These don't seem to come around for sale often...

The Mauser 66 was quite popular in Europe and as such mounts/rings can be found. I think NECG had a listing for EAW mounts/rings. They are not cheap, but they are very good. When you say rail mount, do you mean a mounting system that does not use rings? If that is the case then you would need to use a scope with a built in system. I think they are called "schienen montage".

Thanks for the info 1899... any chance that I can have an iron foresight added on the barrel and get an original Mauser rear sight for the 11mm rail? It looks like that I am encouraged to just go with a scope, or find a Mauser 66 that came stock with the irons...

Basically, the Mauser 66 that I am looking at purchasing does not have:

A - a front sight
B - a rear (adjustable and mounted on C) sight

It does however have:

C- the 11mm rail.

What I am asking, is if those items A & B are available anywhere, and if a competent gunsmith would be able to attach the fore sight like from the factory...

I guess a good gunsmith could do anything if he/she was compensated accordingly.

Here is a picture of me with a Model 66 in 8x68S, notice the mounting position of the front ring.

EDIT - I see you have a much better picture! Those sights should be very doable by a good gunsmith! The rings there look like EAW's. I checked Numrich, they have parts for the 660, but not the ones you need! There are good aftermarket open sights too.

Yes, I see how its mounted...

But you are lucky enough to have one with sights as well...

This is only the second I have come across here, and both had no sights and/or mounts... I just hate to pass it up, but I like to shoot with irons better.

Edit - OK - I might go for it then, but will sleep on it... If it had the irons it would already be mine... uhhh.

They are great rifles. Here are some pics of front sights on the Model 66:

And notice rear sight position compared to your photo, this is how I recall the rear sight on the one I used. I don't think the picture you posted is a factory sight.

I don't know if the pic I posted is a factory sight for sure, but it looks similar to many of the ones depicted in the pictures I have found online. I found it harder to find the couple pictures of the Mauser 66 without the irons...

Hey IchBinEinSniper,If its a set of rings you are looking for maybe I can help.I traded my 66 in on another rifle last fall(long/hard decision/long story)and am left with a set 1 inch rings. These must be original Mauser rings as I aquired this rifle right from the boys that built it.The screwheads are a little messed up(another story)but if you can use them you can have them.get back to me if you're interested.

Sorry for the long wait... I think I am going to let this one go. I had a lump in my throat when I saw it on the wall, then a pain in my chest when I saw it was without irons... elation and then disappointment. :(

Thanks for the info and help everyone. One will come by... someday.
