Mauser 66 - Project or not

I got the shine far enough that I called it good. Reassembled and now will let it fully cure. The white line and rosewood look good to me and will be left alone. Its not perfect but much better without the coin. Talked to Trace, he works on old claw mount scopes and will take a look at it.

Very nice.

How does it shoot? As I understand it, the whole purpose of Walther Gehmann's telescoping action for the Mauser 66 was to shorten lock time in order to increase accuracy. He was a legendary target shooter and also an inventor of target shooting accessories.

Thanks Rob
No idea how it shoots as the scope has issues which may take a while to get resolved.
The gun doesn’t appear to have been shot much. The barrel, bolt face, bolt handle bluing, trigger bluing all look like new. So here’s hoping after all this it is reasonably accurate.

The factory mounts should screw onto the rear and attach to the dovetail rail sight base. But, the rear has been machined out for the claw base, so I don’t see how the mounting solutions meant for a 66 would work.

Too bad that ringmount setup would probably be slick

I have not had great luck personally with MAK rings/ mounts

Unless I'm reading you wrong... his receiver is definitely not machined for that rear claw mount base. IF the rear mount could be removed in a proper manner, he would have the option of using other scope mounts across the board. The front base should drift out of the dovetail after removing the retaining screws.

Excellent job on the stock work, too!

The scope should , could be cleaned up, have you tried to focus it? could be the adjustments are just dry and tight.
looks great.

The claw base on the receiver ring isn’t dovetailed in, but screwed on and silver soldered. The screws remove no issue but if the base was removed there would probably be an ugly scar in the blue. One that would be covered by a new base mind you.

I have heated it up with a hair dryer. Nothing changed. Sticks hard at 3x and loses focus there. 2x is probably useable as is but I’ll see if I can get it fixed up proper.
