Mauser 98 .270 opinions

I know I'm asking for a barrage of varying thoughts and will hear what everyone's favourite rifle is, but I will make up my own mind.
Just interested in hearing some informed thoughts and opinins on this rifle.
Any inherent problems with it? Pros vs. Cons?

I have a .270 Win built on a FN Mauser 98 with a Douglas barrel. It feeds and function perfectly and is very accurate.

When you choose the 98, make sure the mag box is long enough to accommodate the .270 which has a factory OAL of 3.34". Most 98's have mag boxes for the shorter 8X57.
 
I picked up a J.C Higgins Model 50 in .270 a couple months ago now and it also has a FN Mauser action. Unfortunatly I have only been to the range once with it so far but wow, it works some smooth.

So I guess I cant give you a list of pros and cons. But I tell you its probly the classiest rifle I own.

If it's a well-built rifle, it should be "as good as it gets".

How do you improve on the world's best bolt-action?

Of course, there are all kinds of Mausers in levels of condition that vary from "exceptional" to "junk" and, of course, varying levels of competence in the gunsmiths who put them together.

On the whole, I've been generally very pleased with the custom Mausers I've owned over the years. So, you'll probably be pretty happy.

If you don't know the person who's selling it, it's always a good idea to get it checked out by a competent gunsmith before putting your money down.

Is the one you are considering a commercial 98 or a rebuilt military one?

Thousands of excellent sporters have been built on former military actions.
