How does one go about smoothing a 98 action on a rebuild. Its stiff when cocking and sticks when pulled back and forth. It works OK but is there a trick to this?? Valve grinding cpd(fine?0

Is it binding at one spot? or is it generally tight?
I have used polishing paste mixed with grease and worked bolts back and forth a few hundred times while watching tv with great results -- make sure tho you clean and flush everything afterwards. I try and keep any material out of the front of the bolt so it does not affect the chamber or claw etc - try and keep it localized to the back end of the bolt.

I would rather use a polishing paste and work it longer instead of a grinding compound and cut metal too quickly.

Check to see if by tightening the action screws you are torquing the action at all - that may cause a slight flex that feels like a bind.

it also depends on the action itself- i had a brasilian in 06 that would bind at 1' o clock no matter what you did becasue the locking lugs were funny- my 8mm was a smooth as butter

It's real possible that the action is binding due to the bedding. Loosen up both front and rear action screws a bunch and cycle the action. If it is much smoother with the action screws loose, then you have solved your problem. Rather than bedding, you may just get away with adding a rear action screw furrel. I think Brownell sells them, or you can make one out of brake tubing.

all of the above, with a lot of emphasis on the guide rib and its channel.

because of the sloppiness of the bolt in its guides, it's very easy to pull the bolt to one side and cause binding of the bolt by jamming the guide against the guide channel.

One of the older, commercial 98s I own has a relieved guide channel as well as a reduced width guide. It's smooth as glass on oil.

Smoothing 98 action

One trick that worked for me was to colour the entire bolt black with permanent marker, then work it in the action a few times. The marker will be rubbed off where the bolt is bearing in the receiver, and that lets you know where to smooth the metal. Just polish very lightly in those areas, and it will smooth it right up. The rest of the marker comes off with your favourite solvent.
