Mauser 98 Bolt Bending - Need a Jig!

You can cut, welded or bend; but the bolt must be kept for get tooo hot. There are ways to heat srink or strech a bolt if it is damaged but it's so much easier to avoid it.

I cut mine off flush with the bolt, and gave it a 1/2 turn. I'd like a little more flair on the handle but it fits in the scabbard easier like this.

To retain the original look, I have cut off the bolt handle, welded an extension onto it, and then used that longer handle welded at the appropriate angle. I just wrapped the disassembled bolt in a wet rag.

I cut off the handle, straightened the surface and made a new handle that was screwed on to check shape and angle before final weld. No issues even with larger scopes.

If you have a shop you can use, making a bending jig would not be a hard job.
as the fellows have said. cutting it off and welding on a new one is the way to go,
use a heat sink as not to distort the bolt.

My Mauser bolt handle sits right down on the bottom of the notch and still just kisses the scope ever so slightly. I have standard height leupold rings on it. With that gun it's usually a one shot wonders, other than at the range, but follow up shots are usually not needed. The flop in the Mauser action is to blame for some of the rubbing in my situation, but I do believe taller rings would solve the issue 100%.

I have bending blocks and heat sinks for a few different bolts. Do they work OK? Yes. Are there better alternatives? Again, yes. Cutting, reshaping and welding are the way to go.
BTW- In addition to heat sinks, wet rags are used, along with heat stop paste..

Thanks to everyone who replied, I've gone ahead and borrowed a set of bending blocks from a user and copied them in the shop, along with a rod that I've replicated the mauser bolt's buttress thread onto. Just waiting for welding paste to arrive, and I'll crack at it!
