Mauser 98 chambered in 6.5x55?

Years ago I had a chance to buy an honest 9& chambered from the factory in 6.5x55 - it's the only factory MILSURP 98 I have ever seen
i recently ran into s 6.5x55 on a 98 action have had been heavily sporterized with the stock taken down to a Mannlicher style , step barrel ( may have been Re- barrelled ) bolt handle turned down and a Williams peep
installed .
the receiver has gad the markings all polished off.
my question is, has anybody seen many factory 98's chambered in 6.5x55?
i know for a fact the one I saw years ago was all original , but like I said , it us the only one I have ever seen .

I have a difficult time believing it was a military issued a 6.5x55 in a M98 action. The two major nations who dealt with the round either used Krags, or M94 actions. The only nation which I can think of using a M98 action in 6.5x55 is Denmark for there target rifles which they built off captured German Mausers.
 
Yes, I have, it is a somewhat rare Mauser, it was called a "T.St.V." or "wehrmanngewehr" commercially made by Mauser for target shooting that was mainly made in 8.15x46mm, but also 6.5x55mm also for civilian and para military target shooting competitions.

Tiroler Standschützen Verband, Named after this old organization had been turned into a Nazi paramilitary unit, and the rifle is one of a series of Wehrmanngewehre specifically made by Mauser for the T.St.V. - not a remarked earlier version. Apparently no less than 34000 shooters took part in that last championship in 1944!

This is one and what they looked like, they have no military markings on them -

Dang, should have bought the first one I saw, it was all original and untouched .
My sporter on the other hand? No idea, but would not surprise me if it had a different barrel on it, although it is also stepped.
I'm not sure whether or not a '96 barrel will bolt up t a '98 or not but will check.

As Eaglelord says, it's not military issue. That gun you show mkernal is commercially proofed.

Could be m98 in 6.5 but not military.

I'd not heard of them using anything other then 8.14x46 but I've never really followed that area.
 
Here is some close up picture's of one in 6.5x55mm, The Swedish 6.5x55mm was a very popular target shooting cartridge from day one when it was introduced in 1894, notice the lack of any normal military markings -

its could also be a Danish Schultz & Larsen mod m59 or m69 . some had stepped military barrels. post some pictures so we can have a look.
 
BTW my complete bolt is blued , not polished And I believe I can see some slight eagle markings on the side .
This leaves me to believe that it is a heavily modified military rifle that was not originally a 6.5x55
certainly however the first one I saw years ago was the same as the target model pictured.

Actually i never did say say it was a MILSURP ,i stated that the first one i ever saw was s milsurp which I now know it wasn't.
I said this one was a heavily modified '98 and looked like all the markings had been polished off which they have , and it certainly looks like s Re- barrel job .Thanks for all the help everyone, I'm a shotgun guy not a milsurp guy!

Pics up!

Hopefully these will help.
I took it out of the stock and there are a few stampings underneath
also the action screws have no locking screws - dunno if that means anything or not .
Also, there is no cross bolt in the stock and no plug whee one was take out.
you can see where the cleaning rod hole in the stock has been plugged as well .

do you have a picture that shows the full action and bolt .. from the top or side ? it appears to be a Swedish barrel in a small ring action in these pictures ?
 
I don't have a Wehrmann rifle, but I DO have one of the rare micrometer peep sights - marked 'Wehrmann', on my original m/96 Carl Gustaf in 6.5x55. It is an easy conversion - you remove the bolt latch screw, place the sight on top of the latch, and use the longer screw to re-fix it. It folds down flat when not is use, and has a VERY small and non-adjustable aperture.

I can email pics to anybody interested.

Mine has a completely visible vernier to both the elevation and windage/azimuth scales, and is marked 'Wehrmann'. The other major difference is that mine cos me £130.00 two years ago!
