Mauser 98 safety function

I just acquired a new (to me) Mauser 98. Its a Chilean .308 carbine. For some reason the cocking sleeve doesn't move far enough back once the gun is cocked for the safety to function. Is the bolt assembled incorrectly? Has anyone encountered this problem?
 
I doubt that the bolt is assembled incorrectly. Two possibilities come to mind. I have seen a couple of M98 cocking pieces that were a bit shorter than normal. If you can get hold of another cocking piece to try you can investigate this. Another poss. is that a previous owner has tried to do a bubba trigger job and removed material from the face of the sear. If this is the case another trigger mech. should fix it. If no spare parts are available, you may be able to get it working by grinding a slight chamfer on the corner of the cocking piece where the safety is supposed to slide in front of it.

I really dont like the mauser safeties, I would look into an aftermarket trigger with integrated safety myself.
 
When the bolt is in the action, closed and cocked can you move the safety to the vertical position but not to the position fully to the right? If you can't get it to either position it sounds like the assembly could be one full rotation from being screwed in completely.

You can do a quick check by turning the cocking piece out of rotation so the firing pin falls. Then look to see if you are getting proper firing pin protrusion at the bolt face.

To get it turned back grab the sides of the cocking piece in a vise or on a strong steel counter edge and pull on the bolt body until you can rotate it back to the original position while engaging the safety at the vertical position. Push the plunger in on the left side of the cocking piece shroud and screw it together one (or more as required) rotation(s) and then retest in the rifle for proper safety function.

A lot of military rifles have have parts interchanged and that could also present a problem as previously mentioned. But before purchasing a new part check the assembly is complete.
 
When I restocked my M98 9.3x62 I had a problem getting the safety over to the 3 o'clock (safe/lock) position. Then I realized that my bolt notch was slightly shallow. I removed a bit mroe material and the safety worked perfectly. Put some lipstick (if you don't have inletting black) on the underside of the bolt and close the action. Then open the action and see if there is any lipstick on the wood at the bottom of the bolt notch then remove it with a chisel/file/scraper/sandpaper. Repeat until there is clearance between the bolt handle and the stock. Then see if the safety works. If not then take it to a gun plumber.
 
hmm, I disassembled the bolt, then reassembled with no luck, it seems that the cocking sleeve would have to be back almost another 5mm for the safety to function. I am going to compare it to my Husky Mauser 98 8mm and see what the bolt differences are. I think I just may leave it as is and swap in a nice trigger with safety built in.
