I bought a mauser 98, the bases on it are #26 rear and #20 front and look mismatched. The catalogues call for #45 rear and #46 front. I tried Leupold bases but the holes are farther apart on the front base so don't match up with the screw holes! Does anyone know if the 26 and 20 bases work on a 98? A search hasn't come up with any answers. Thanks in advance for help on this.

Those bases may work but you won't know until you mount a scope on it and shoot it...

M98's don't come with scope mount holes... so.. a huge amount of 98's are butchered by wantabe smiths by holes in the wrong places and not in alignment with the bore... whenever drilling for a scope base on an unaltered 98 action, the hole placement is best done by using a Leupold one piece base for the M98... Locate and drill and tap those 3 holes correctly, then if you want to use a two piece base, locate the 4th hole using the rear base...

And the FN 98 bases were different with two different hole spacing patterns JC Higgins 50 +51........Harold
